I am going for my first visit to Germany soon and will have a 3 year-old with me. Does anyone know if there are particular rules about young children in taxis?

I am hoping we can just hail a cab in the street if we want to use one but if there is a requirement to use a children's seat, I guess a taxi has to be booked and/or I have to find a taxi which is carrying a car seat?

I am going to be in Koblenz if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

Yep, taxi is going to need a childs seat: http://www.adac.de/infotestrat/ratgeber-verkehr/ki...

You're probably going to have to pre-book or ask the controller when calling as not all taxis have them.

Kindersitz - 7.

Thanks.

I don't speak any German but hopefully the local tourist office might be able to help book one if the local taxi drivers don't speak any English. Are taxi drivers likely to speak any English or maybe French?

WRONG, These rules DO NOT apply when a paid hire vehicle is used. i.e. Taxis (when hired) DO NOT have to have/use a childs seat!!!!

That only says that Taxis don't need to carry child seats - however if a child is in the taxi you'll still need one if your kid is heavier than 9kgs (40 Euro fine).... Some do - you'll either have to ask when you get one in the street or call and tell the operator that you need a cab that carries one.

Noneedtolift:- Sorry chappie you're wrong

Read the following which was posted by Darmstadt. Have also spoken to a friend who's a taxi driver here and there are NO regulations in force for taxis in D!!

That means these regulations DO NOT apply to paid transport!

I thought I'd update how we got on:

We were told by the tourist office in Koblenz that it's not possible to hail taxis in the street so we had to go to a taxi office anyway, where they had a child seat available and it was used for our trip.

Good, glad you were helped, but the tourist office was talking bullshot, you can flag down a taxi anywhere in Germany and they are obliged to stop if not hired!
