I am planning a trip to Germany this summer, I'm keen to hear from people who have been before about car-oriented things to do.

Obviously I'm keen to do factory tours, Nurburgring, museums, what else do people suggest?

I am mostly interested in VW/Audi related places but I am definitely open minded to whatever else is on offer.

End of July there is an excellent Historic rally in Daun near Nurburgring.

Google "Eifel historic rally festival" or similar.

Went last year, going again next month.

Have a tour of BMW Dingolfing, which is apparently much better than the tour at Munich as you get right up to where they put together the 5,6 and 7er.

I've got the email address of the bloke who organises the tours somewhere. I shall dig it out.

Hit on Adenauer's wife.
One and the same surely? wink

Although I did hear his garden has now been turned into a dead lesbian theme park....

Visit the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt (hour or two worth) and also do a factory tour. The town is a nice place to visit and stay. You can do a factory tour in Neckarsulm too though I don't like it so much as a place for a general visit.

Sinsheim Auto & Technik Museum (already mentioned) has a *lot* of car and other interesting things to see. Can easily burn a whole day looking around, Concorde and the Tu-144 are worth the trip just to see how different they actually are apart from the superficial similarity. Car collection is enormous and has lots of good stuff and many historic race cars including a lot from the various factory collections (Porsche, Mercedes, Audi etc.). Also try to get to the Technik Museum Speyer nearby which is related and has a Buran shuttle among other things.

Deutsches Museum at Oberschleissheim is good if you'd be interested in aircraft, including prototype stuff. Also some space bits. Main Deutsches Museum in Munich has a more general collection of science and technology, also makes a good dinner/party venue if you have the budget to book it out...

BMW Welt and Museum in Munich can be worth a look. Though as mentioned there are other options for BMW visits.

Have visited all the above at various time.

Porsche and Mercedes museums etc. both available in Stuttgart. Never been to these though.

For trip planning assuming you go by car I would suggest start with Sinsheim area, then Stuttgart, Nerkarsulm is then nearby, then head south via Ingolstadt then hit Munich. It's actually all relatively close together so you are quite flexible in moving around.

Wolfsburg (the VW factory) is probably the best car factory in Germany IMO.

I felt the Porsche museum to be a massive let down and it was more interesting browsing the service car park of the adjacent Porsche dealer.
