Hi all, is there a database where I can look up to see if a car has been an insurance write-off in Germany, i.e. a Vollschaden? And what happens when a Vollschaden happens, i.e. does the Fahrzeugbrief go through the shredder? I think not as such cars seem to end up on a transporter to Poland or NL - but I'd be curious to know what's supposed to happen.
I get the outstanding finance part though, as a Financial institution will hold onto the full Fahrzeugbrief until the loan is paid off in full.
Many thanks in advance

There's no similar category system in place in Germany, afaik. The condition of Totalschaden is an insurance one, which says what value will be reimbursed. There's no control to track if a damaged car had been repaired and brought back on the road. Sellers of repaired cars are obliged to inform the buyer if any structural damage had been repaired.

The problem with that is that cars get exported as damaged, then repaired in (say) Poland or Holland. Then it seems there's no obligation to keep a buyer informed of the wrecked state it came from Germany in.
There's got to be a business idea there for some German person to develop such a database, get insurance company buy-in...
