Last night I may have been flashed on the A40, just after crossing the border at Venlo but I have never seen speed cameras in the overhead gantrys here before?

Is this a new thing or am I worrying about nothing?

It was a temporary 80km/hr limit, radar control signs and it was a blueish white flash.

I think it is the system for toll tracking for trucks, which you are describing.

But then again, you may be screwed. Let's hope it's the former. It probably seemed to be a rather weedy "flash"?

Right, I drove back to Germany in daylight on Friday, and they are definitely not the HGV toll cameras, they look similar to uk SPECS type cameras with a separate flash unit. They were in a temporary 80 kph limit with signs saying radar control so I'm sure there will be a ticket waiting for me when I get back to work frown

They are speed cameras, some are also used for spotting tailgaiters

The lorry toll tracking thingy over the Autobahn is grey and has lots of cameras in it. There are no speed limit warning signs written on them and they can't catch you speeding.

If it is a big black box with a speed limit lit up on it (like those found on the M25), then it is possible that they have speed cameras in them (there are two small boxes under the speed sign where the camera is located). However, it is worth bearing in mind that not all these temporary speed limit signs have cameras in them.

Did you receive a fine?

No fine as yet, however I have had a few fines take upwards of 6 months to appear.

A friend of mine was flashed by the same camera a month before me and he has just received his fine. The cameras are not in the same style as the M25 variable limit ones, it is just a plain gantry with a CCTV style camera and flash unit for each lane with 80 kph signs in the central reservation about 100m before.

Isn't this the low speed limit for the border crossing? I always creep through there as there's usually a cop car or customs car sitting watching the traffic anyway.

It is strangely low, been like that since at least march. The signs look like temporary roadwork ones but in the last 6 months I've crossed the border there at least 10 times and not seen any roadworks at all!
