Arriving back in Germany after Christmas last night was my first real experience of the German autobahns (currently carless frowncry ), driving from Frankfurt airport over to Saarbrucken. The dark and the tricky weather conditions, very windy and a lot of rain, made it rather interesting. Had a bit of a moment where I didn't interpret my rear view mirror correctly and ended up in the outside lane with a couple of rather fast motorists bearing down on me (my fault). But anyway, at times it was tricky to see where the road was going... why don't the germans use cats eyes?

Cats eyes are brilliant, but Germany has gone down the road of road-edge poles with differing reflector shapes for each side, which also change colour on exits (to orange instead of white). Just needs getting used to.... different countries different traditions.

Possibly the risk of damage to snowplough blades, possibly water can get into the units or road surface causing damage when it freezes and expands. Can be deeply unpleasant trying to see the lanes in the dark, in wet weather.

The germans have a patent on a specially developed road paint which goes completely invisible at night when wet ;-o Try negotiating a a major road crossing in the wet at night when you have no clue which lane you should be in.
