Importing kitcars into germany
Discussion
I have been looking to buying a used caterham-type car in Germany but found them in short supply and expensive. In the PH classifieds there are loads of example for under 10K, has anybody looked at importing a kitcar and getting it through a TUV?
Alternatively, I have looked at a self-build left hand drive, but can't find any definitive answers on German vehicle certification.
Cheers

Unless you have the official EU (manufacturers)certification papers (which you can't have for a kitcar) you'll find you'll have to get an individual initial TüV and this may well cost you many thousands of Euros in a worst case scenario. They'll pick your car to bits and find countless minimal changes which you'll have to make to comply with german law. Teh TüV or Dektra will really f++k you over UNLESS you have a specialist who'll assist. The caterham and similar dealers want to keep the market to themselves and not help "cheapo" imports
I wanted to import a rebuilt Morris 1000 traveller and went through all the rigmarole, and found that I'd have to add about €3500 to the price to get it registered here (Morris is defunkt so cannot initiate EU paperwork, germany refuse to accept any "old" papers)
