The time of year is here again when the car insurance renewal lands on the door mat with a massive thump. This is my third renewal with VHV Versicherungen and I am surprised yet again to see that the premium is still massive and shows no sign of reducing. I have not had any accidents since coming here in Dec 09 and came with a full NCB from the UK. License is also clean and I am 39. The policy was originally set up through an agent which work provides but now I am wondering if I should shop around.

So, how does this renewal for a 2006 330 diesel in Bonn look like to you? I am aslo confused between haftpflicht and fahrzeugversicherung. My concern is that the agent "ticked all the boxes" when she set me up and now I am living with the consequences. We also have policies with VHV for the XC90 and Elise where the story in similar.

Any advice before they raid my bank account in January?
Cheers,
Stuart

I suffer from the same problem, and interestingly I'm also insured by VHV through an agent. I also brought a full NCB with me but my Mini JCW still costs me ca. 1,600€ per year and the horrible VW Touran costs ca. 800€ per year. I am Fahrzeugversicherung on both cars (which is probably too much on the Touran).

The agent I know through my (German) wife. He is the same agent her family has been using for years so I'm hoping we can trust him to get the best deal. I did do a check on the internet when I insured the Mini (because I was so surprised at the premium) and I have to say that the quotes came back no cheaper!!!! You can phone around and go on the internet as we do in the UK, so if you feel you are being short changed you can shop around. However, as in the UK, this is very time consuming.

From my understanding, "Haftpflicht" is the equivalent to our 3rd Party while "Fahrzeugversicherung" is the equivalent to Full Comp. The way I view it is, yes insurance is more expensive than the UK, but it is more inclusive. Anyone can drive your car, insured as a normal driver and not 3rd party with their own insurance and you can drive abroad without any additional paperwork and cost. However, you can be more specific with your insurance, so for example, if you are the only driver of the Elise, you can state that in the insurance, however as it is the car that is insured and not the person, no-one else will be able to drive it (what I mean by this is that if a friend of yours is insured to drive his own car, this will not cover him for your car).

The alternative is to change cars. I had a Porsche 996 Targa which cost me 900€ a year to insure although the conditions were identical to the Mini (it was even RHD). Go figure that one out!

Thanks. Maybe I should convince the Mrs I need a 996 and justify it as a cost saving biggrin

I have made some progress though, through a site called check 24 I was able to get a comparable policy to this one for 900 Euros through ADAC. For 300 Euros I am prepared to so through the hassle of writing a letter to stop the renewal of my existing policy.

As posted on another topic

One tip when buying car insurance,
DON'T buy from a Versicherungsagentur as they're bound to one insurance!!
BUY ONLY through a Versicherungsmakler (insurance trader),
they will fight for you and get you the best deal as they trade with all insurance companies not just their employer..... It might mean you change ins coys every couple of years but they'll ensure you keep your NCB.
The first time I moved from an Agentur to a Makler I saved over €2500,- total on 4 cars!!!!

Some of the prices quoted here seem ridiculous... and the VHV is no longer one of the cheapest... Try Generali or Kravag!!!!

"Fahrzeugversicherung" simply means vehicle insurance:

Fahrzeug = vehicle
ersicherung = insurance

Haftpflicht = 3rd party
Vollkasko = fully comprehensive
Teilkasko = fully comp with an excess of your choice

I thought the car insurance over here seems very reasonable.

Hafplicht on my 1995 1.8 (petrol) Mondeo estate is €341. I am 30, the only driver and have 8 years NCB (transferred from my UK policy with no hassle or even translation of the UK docs) doing 15,000km/year. Without the NCB it was something like €1050 yikes

If you get stuck with any words, use www.leo.org - it's fantastic smile

you may save a bit changing the insurance. (the online caluclator resulted ~950euro based on a E46 Limousine 330d, 29y old driver, private storage, owner and wife as driver, 15000km annual mileage)

here an online calculator of one of the well known german insurance companies:

click on "Angebot berechnen"..but its in german!!!

Thanks- in the end I used one of these calculators to compare the market and ended up going with ADAC for 900 Euros. Still expensive but much better than my original quote!
