Anyone done this in Germany?

Or more to the point, how do I get rid of the shell / registration document once all the parts are stripped?

I have been offered a modern Passat for peanuts with a knackered gearbox and power steering problem. She can't be bothered/afford to fix it. I want the LHD headlights for mine and a few other bits. Looking on eBay, it seems Passat bits command strong money over here, and I could easily recoup my costs and then some.

In the UK I stripped a couple of Mercs and an MX5. I then simply weighed the shell in and told the DVLA of my exploits. I fear it may not be so easy in Germany!

Any comments of experience would be most gratefully received smile

You have to have a scrapyard who will help with the "ecologically sound" recycling of all the parts... that's why there are few scrap yards in D!!! If you leave any parts around you'll be liable for large sums and you have to have all the recycling capabilities for all the fluids etc.....
Unless you have someone who will help I'd leave it...

No problem in the privacy of your own home.. where are you based? There are plenty of 'Schrotthändler' and you can find them on the net, most will buy the shell and other useful bits.. you can take the fluids to the Wertstoffhof FOC..

You can deregister the car at the KfZ-amt.. I have done this a few times in Germany, and made quite a bit of money... worthwhile if you have the right car.. Else, you can take the car to the Ludoffs...;-) (if you have been here long enough and watch DMAX, you'll know who they are)..

So, what did you do? Has the car been "permenently exported?"

It does help if you're a Brit and therefore have a good reason to make the car disappear from the registration system...

Hi Mike,

The car is still sat there. The trouble is that is was a UK RHD car, permanently exported and registered/TÜV'd here. The gearbox then broke two days later! She is pretty lazy (her words, not mine!), so the car will just sit there I suppose, but I decided to walk away.

I bought a UK registered Passat in the end, and have 12 month greencard insurance - worked out much cheaper that way. Not really a long term solution, but it will do for now.

Well, I couldn't just leave it there could I?!

Bought the car de-registered, and the owner was simply happy with that. I hope she never gets any repercussions, but she said she phoned up about it... We took it Eindhoven in The Netherlands and broke it up there. Weighed it in at the local scrap metal place, and was surprised that no questions were asked (I had all the paperwork if required).

Just about broken-even selling parts off now, and still have over 150 parts left on the inventory that we created.

Some pics?
