In late August me and a mate are taking our cars on a road trip to europe through the Alps and home via the Belgian Gp.

The thing is our ferry wont get into Dunkirk until 1am local time and we need somewhere to grab some sleep before we embark on a 7 and a half hour drive down to Switzerland and dont want to spend too much. I had thought about getting some sleep in one of the autoroute rest areas but the more I think about it and read the more I think it could be a bad idea.

Cheers for any help smile

About as cheap as it gets outside of a tent.

Used Formula1 hotels in the past when driving down to the South of France.
The French got it spot on with these.
Very good price and very clean.

Formula 1 everytime. We got off the ferry at Dunkirk (Norfolkline) at about that time at the end of April and intended to get a couple of hours kip in the car at one of the Aires at the start of our trip down to Morzine. Every lay by was full up with trucks and it wasn't until we were south of Lisle that we managed to stop for a rest, only to be woken up by the trucks running their engines for ages before they left. The security side didn't really occur to me at the time but afterwards I realised it probably wasn't a very sensible thing to do. I don't know what stories you've heard but we wouldn't do that again in a hurry.

Just read stories about it being very dodgy in the area from Dunkirk to just past Lille with cars being broken into and people in motorhomes even being gassed through the air vents so they know nothing about it until they wakes up. I cant find the article I read but it was a warning from the home office basically telling Brits not to sleep in their vehicles in rest areas.

I slept with my wife and kids at the service station down near Montelemar.
There was no problem other that too hot to sleep as the place was full of holiday makers.
People were trying to sleep all around. I ended up on the bench next to my car with my wife and kids inside.
Never any concerns but made my mind up to book a Formula1 room well in advance for future trips.
Made a big difference to the next mornings driving enjoyment and stopping for breakfast etc.
