We're currently in Brittany, staying just outside Rennes, and when out and about it frequently feels like I've got rear wheel vibration/wheel out of balance.

This wasn't noticeable whilst in the UK and is less prevelant on minor roads.

Is this just a characteristic of French main roads or do I need a mechanic? smile

You need a wheel specialist from the sound of it. French roads are infinitely better than British ones. Could yours have been damaged by road humps in the UK but you never noticed because the roads are so crap? I've lived here 10 years and have never had a vibration problem - and it's still the same car I've kept all that time.

Did wonder if it might be a problem. I had the wheels swapped front to back before leaving the UK so what have expected it show up earlier.

Know any decent tyre places around Rennes?

Look for Midas or Norauto. They are sure to be somewhere near.

Sure I've driven past a branch of Midas in Rennes, on the southern part of the ring road.

There's a Norauto about 10km from here. Someone else has suggested euromaster as well.
Will try Norauto first on my out after breakfast.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Quick visit to Norauto and explaining in my best Franglais what the problem was he was unhappy to try and balance the rear wheels because of the uneven tyre wear.
These were the front tyres until last week hence the wear.
I asked them to swap the wheels back front to back to see if that would sove it.
25 euros, and a lot of attention in the car later, job done and the problem has 99% gone.
Thanks for your help lowdrag.
