Hi all,

i would like to take my motorbike on some of the green lanes that are around france ( mainly just gravel roads) I am having some trouble finding the proper names for them or a map that shows them. I have seen plenty of routes on google earth but they are restricted fire tracks so thats a no no to use them.

Can anyone help me out??

thanks rob.

There are not really a great deal of "green lanes" in the French countryside as we know them.

However, many of the country roads are so deserted that you could treat them as such.

Aren't there also no "trespass" laws in France so you can go anywhere provided you do not damage any vegetation?

If so then all tracks are effectively "green lanes" provided you cause no damage.

There is a classification of 'Chemin rurale' which is effectively a greenlane, BUT if you live in a forest area don't use the 'DFCI Piste' they are access roads for the Pompiers and you will get fined if you are caught using one.

Chemin rurale are covered by all the same rules of the road, CT insurance etc so if you want to blat around with something unregistered you'll need to find a piece of private land.

thanks for the replies... i heard of the 'Chemin rurale' roads and the bike is fully road legal/insured etc so no worries on that score.
just trying to find a decent map that includes and shows them clearly, as i have found some that are marked as a rurale, but it is in fact a fire access track.

its for the alsace region if that makes any difference.

As a keen mountain biker I am aware of the classification of tracks in the UK, on my first organised ride in France I was amazed where we went and it was explained to me that unless it says no access then you are free to ride.Lots of the tracks are field access tracks and as is often the case with multiple land owners no-one is quite sure who has rights. My house is 250 metres from the road but there is access to a wood and I have no idea how many people own little bits of the wood so the track up to a point gets used, not often but it is open to anybody.
You need the IGN large scale maps to see where they go but expect many dead ends and just as many pleasant suprises.

Hi

dont listen to all the crap on here, ive lived in France for 6 years and I know the facts! You can go off road ANYWHERE you like as long as there are no signs saying you shouldnt. Nobody could be even bothered to call the cops here anyway, unlike in the UK where every idiot wants to dob you in. Gendarmes will NOT venture into the hills to bother you, I guarantee it.

I regularly use the fire tracks and so do the hunters, nobody gives a toss! The tracks are so plentiful, nobody will even notice youre there, just respect the fact that there maybe walkers and cyclists. If you hit any animals - ie wild boar, take it into the village and have a great barby!

Remember, its so vast here that its not a nuisance to anyone. Come to France, enjoy your off roading and leave the moaners at home,
