Afternoon All,

Quite a minority poster here on Pistonheads, but got the nod from a freind that there was a France section on here so thought I'd have a look around !

I'm going through the motions of potentially if I fit the bill of working for a major multinational aerospace company based in Toulouse (Should give the game away nicely I thought) and just wondered whether there were any fellow PH'ers in the area who could give me some pointers.

Very early days at the moment, but I've been invited for an assessment centre at the site in mid April. Plan was to go over a couple of days before and after so I can give the opportunity the respect it deserves and get a grip of the local area (plus its an excuse for a break away with the other half)

Interested to know anything people think is worth knowing about the area, even better if you work at the company in question !

In the meantime, i'll have a read through the threads here smile

Hi,
I lived just outside Toulouse for about 5 years, and I can honestly say Toulouse is great, young and cool and busy and beautiful, but you really should live in the centre to profit from it. I have friends at the company in question and most UK people are involved in Aerospace so you will have a head start on a social life.
Go for it, you can always go back if you dont like it!
Justin

Thanks for the reply Justin, much appreciated.

I'd certainly look to live close/in Toulouse initially to get myself settled. but once I had a better feel for the surrounding area I'd certainly be looking for moving a bit further out and buying a place to properly settle down. I'm absolutely blown away at how sensible property prices are !!!

Do you mind if I ask if you rented or bought a place there?

Lot of friends over there, most of whom work for the said company (or a subsidiary thereof)

I'm there quiet often (week after next in fact) and always stay in town.

Found that most of the long term people stay away from town, usually a few miles north, Mondonville, Aussonne, Beauzelle etc.

If I was there for a couple of years or so, this would be my move, but for a few weeks at a time I prefer the atmosphere of the centre.

Most of my mates are renting as they're on fixed time contracts, though a few of the old timers have bought places.

Hi Conanius

I am about 70 kms NW of Toulouse 25 km N of Albi, next to a Cordes sur Ciel. Came here 18 months ago to take a year out. Ended up buying a small farm house with a massive barn (read garage). Still renovating, but were in.

I joined the local Porsche club to take advantage of track days, and make some new friends. Track days at 125 euros ! and that included Barcelona GP circuit last Sept. Also joined the SW Lotus/generl motoring forum who do track days for even less. Some great driving roads around here, and as you have fond low prices for property. Other things thoug hare generally much more expensive than the UK. If you do come them drop a me PM. Best of luck. BobT

I'd certainly rent to start with if I was you. Friends here bought when they arrived but due to illness wanted to move back but are stuck until the house sells. Also, I reckon the euro will continue to weaken against the pound making any house you buy in the end that bit cheaper. Not sure about the Toulouse rental market, but if it it like most of france then there will be a good selection at reasonable rents.

Best of luck in your new life; I am sure I speak for many here that once you settle into the french way of life you won't consider going back!

I bought my house (maison de maitre) so its a bit large. Converted farm house sitting in 10 acres of land!

Dont see much due to lots of work keeping me busy in the oil/gas industry

I can recommend the Melting Pot pub (Toulouse) for a drink (its an Irish bar in the centre of Toulouse, its always full of Airbus and Aerospace related Brits. It will be good fun when the world cup kicks off. (always good for watching football or other sports, they have Skysports)

I have been going to Toulouse for a couple a days per month with work for the last few years. My office is overlooking the mock up Concorde in Colomiers.I usually travel on my own and always find similar people in the Melting pot who will share a chat and a pint or two.
Fantastic city every night is a Saturday night

Yeah Toulouse is lovely, stayed in the square when I was looking for a house. Then I found the house, but I spend time further south and south west, would love to see more of Toulouse but I have time to do it

Place du Capitole in the centre of Toulouse is really nice facing the town hall, unfortunately my works travel budget doesn't allow me to stay at the Crowne Plaza I get put up in the Ibis Matabiau in the dodgy area.

Forgot about this thread...

How's it going conanius? Any decisions made yet?

@Turbo5, it seems I work quite near you sometimes. (The small facility opposite the main factory gates)

There again in a couple of weeks, though down at St Martin this time. Hope I can get home this trip after being volcanoed the last time.

You ever get in the 6 Nations pub up in Colomiers at lunch times? Well worth it, excellent food and very well priced. smile

I also stay up in the area you do (any of the ones on the front, depends on availability)

Not a lover of the Pot though, don't know why, must be getting old. Usually found in the Kentucky on the Allees Jean-Jaurès.

The first thing you need is not to speak French but be able to afford to live after paying all the fking stupid taxes to pay for the work shy teachers and SNCF employees who still think it's their right to retire at 60 with a mega pension.

any of you at the company named above still?

i have an offer of a contract there in the near future but the agency will not confirm the company, i presume (and i could well be wrong) that its something to do with planes ;-)
