Hey all,

I have heard that the French Govt is considering lowering all autoroute limits to 110kph. Trials are being started and the results could mean a national policy switch. That would a dreadful waste of some fantastic (mostly nearly empty) roads. The aim is to lower collision speeds (arrgh) and 'save' the planet (as usual).

I hope it resisted by the French motoring public if its true. I'd guess the divide an conquer approach is in evidence. Many French people probaly avoid the expensive tolls so don't get to use 130kph roads that much, hence a limit to the voice of opposition (or common sense).

The twighlight of common sense is defo looming. Glad I have enjoyed a few years of M3 ownership already, the UK will be 50mph NSL eventually.....as councils effect DoT guidance and lower most roads in the abscence of a blanket change. UK 70mph on motorways is TORTURE when they are clear... frown

Drivers in France: stick up for yourselves PLEASE!!

Edit: I meant speed LIMIT in title of course smile

Not heard of this one. I live in the SW france and i know the motorways are 130 most times and 110 when raining, but as you say most of the time they are clear

I only use when im driving up to the UK and if Im heading into europe (spain, germany etc)

Only thing will encourage people to drive more on the N roads which are quite as well and by pass the motorways

Im in UK now and taking my TVR Sagaris back to france for a while so hope its still 130 +/-

The planet has been here for at least 5.7 billion years, and even if we all start driving V8s at 130mph tomorrow will still be here in another 5 billion years.

This was announced on the 30th September ( posted under speeding thread).
Can only hope that it is political sabre rattling and that while a lot attention now will fizzle out eventually.
At the moment the last place you will see a speed check is on the Autoroutes but they will get round to them.
Just over 450,000 tickets issued in August the main holiday month.

I would hope our slightly more vocal French friends might resist the automated fine culture as well as silly speed limits!!! Use the roll-over and soak up the punishment Brits as an exmaple of how NOT to be governed by morons. 450,000 in a few weeks? Crikey. I guess that PROVES it is mostly not relevant how fast you go with regard to safety!! Must mean nearly everyone is at it, and they can only process fines at a finite rate. Mind you common sense left the building years ago with regard to 'speeding' frown

I saw plenty of checks in 130kph areas last May on Autoroutes. Not the measurement part of the checks, but the Police at the tolls, hauling 'offenders' from the queue to pay some 'tax'....Never saw an LEO with laser gun however, must be well hidden. My Snooper told me of numerous 'high risk zones' (co-incidentally where they most often lurk) so I did not fall foul. Kept around 140kph GPS anyway to save fuel.

I was one of the 450,000 last time I got caught was 1996!
Fined 48 euro for 96 in a 90 Sunday 4:00pm notice here in post Thursday.
As soon as you mention a fine to anyone the usual answer is "me too"
From what I read they are trying to get aggreement with the UK to chase up UK drivers.

I usually see lots of speed checks on the Autoroute when I travel down to the Alps 4/5 times a year, but was over couple of weeks ago and not as many as usual (holidays over) but some people stopped. Also saw UK police on moterbikes patroling the stretch up to Calias WTF is this all about?

The deployment of speed limit setting power to councils from the professionals, to enable the roll-out of 50mph NSL by gradual change.....

I just a bit on this in the local news.

Where I live in the Alps Maritimes ALL motorway are limited to max 110 kmph already :-(
There is a plan at government level to make the whole of France 110. However they have stated that they are not in a rush and its seems that some depts (like mine) have already opted for the reduce in speed.

Is made F all difference to the number of crashes so far and actually has increase my consumption of fuel a little (due to gearing on certain sections).

When will they get it in their heads its people sitting 3meters behind that seems to be the cause of most accidents around here..

Just because Jeremy Clarkson calls it a "kph" doesn't mean there is such a thing.

Is km/h that difficult?

I think the 110kph (kmh?) limit is being used as a trial, a colleague from Luxemburgh explained it as being tried on a very busy / high crash autoroute near the border, not sure where. Anyway the 'scientists' have decided that if a very busy road sees a reduction in fatals (or accidents, or what ever they decide to measure) then the roll-out nationally will be debated. IE change from 130 to 110. Seems a bit daft (as ever) since the situation on quiet rural routes is so different, so why impose a limit change on folk needing to cover distance rather than commuting....

A31 between Metz and Luxembourg border. In some places the limit has been reduced to 90 km/h!
It is a very busy road...lots of fixed cameras, lots of unmarked traffic cars. Basically a bloody nightmare!
