Well he asked if I was leaving the parking spot I occupied at the very busy aire & I advised him no. He puts his right hand to his head, thumb to skull above ear & rotates it forward rapidly, fingers cupped. He walked away.
I presume it`s an insult but would love to know!
Perhaps I should have replied with a well known English gesture?

If it was the forefinger, it would have mean "stupid/crazy/mad"
but in 21 years I've been in France, I've never seen that with the thumb...

It *may* relate to the French expression "J'ai un petit velo dans ma tete" which literally means "I have a small bicycle in my head" but actually means "I am a bit mad"... silly

Hello & thanks for the offers!
It did look a bit like a `winding up a clock` action. I thought of replying with a `Harvey Smith` Agincourt 2 fingers salute or maybe a Barnsley kiss, but let it go.
No France this summer with the Euro & fuel priced as they are.

A winding up clock motion means that you have a "spider in the ceiling" and "nothing in the lemon".
