Driving from Norwich to Estepona in Spain next month. I am wondering what I should budget roughly for toll charges through France? Probably be on the A28, A10 and N10 for most of it.

www.viamichelin.com will tell you.

Looks like €52.80 to me - using the N10 from Poitiers to Bordeaux instead of the A10.

Just to inform you on the bit of the route I use frequently:

You'll pay tolls on the A16 from Calais-Amiens. The A28 is then free all the way to Rouen. South of the A13 you'll pay in one go all the way to Tours.

There are fixed cameras on the 2 viaducts just south of the A13. Road drops to one lane across the bridges (good, but not Millau standard!). Limit is 90kmph.

There are also a couple of cameras in the 130 section around Alencon. In both cases they are tricky to spot, but well sign-posted beforehand!

Have seen a couple of mobile traps - just south of Amiens, and again around Alencon.

Thats brilliant, thanks for the info, I will jot it down.

As for the tolls, are they similar to the ones in Spain where I can simply stick my credit card into one of the machines and thats it, payment made. Do you know if its possibly to use an English credit card in these machines?

Thanks again.

There's a variety of flavours. We normally pay cash to a human. UK cards are now generally accepted in tolls and even in automatic petrol stations. We carry a French card to anyway as we need a bank account for our mortgage.

There are 4 signs at the tolls. A picture of a human in a booth, a credit card, coins, (previous 2 tend to be together) and T for Tag. So with a credit card you can visit the human or the card.

Some out of the way exits are automatic only (like our's rolleyes), but again, the card will work.

Petrol is considerably more expensive on the motorways. If you have Tomtom get some POIs for supermarkets and look for some just off the motorway. PM me if you can't find them.

Other hints:
Limit is normally 130kmph on toll routes - if it's raining or you need to use your wipers, it's 110kmph.
On free autoroutes or D/Cs it tends to be 110kmph
You'll need hi-vis vests (as for Spain - law is a little fuzzy, but take one each), triangle(s), spare bulb kits, headlamp deflectors, driving licence, V5, insurance, green card.

Be VERY careful in towns. When you go past the town name in a red border:

This indicates a 50kmph limit

When you leave the town:

Unless another speed limit is shown, then the speed limit is 90kmph

Les Flics are red-hot in towns these days, anything above 80kmph in a town is big trouble.

Best service stations on the A28 are at Le Mans (actually on the A11) and Alencon.

Once again, thats brilliant. The spare bulbs thing would have been my next question so thats that sorted.

I've driven alot in Spain and now familiar with their laws and regulations, but never done France so this is a great start.

I've got a tomtom one europe so I'll see what that comes up with in regards to supermarket fuel stops. You may find a PM winging your way though smile

Thanks again bowtie

Just be prepared for an absolute raping and you won't be far wrong. The tolls are rapidly becoming the most expensive part of the journey for us now.

Hi guys, I live in the SW France in the Haute Garonne, Im overseas at the moment but whats been said on here is good advice, most of the camered roads are well marked and give you ample time to hit the cruise control or slow down in the Sagaris

Have been caught on the N124 heading away from the airport, had fine through the mail, bumas

Towns you need to be that extra careful, which I try to be - pedestrians etc

I was driving from home to Toulouse airport in March and a police van in front of me put its hazards on, I slowed it put them off and I followed it until it turned off at Leguevin, so I suppose they are checking

But driving down that area, and the pyrenees is fantastic, even in the TVR or the BMW

Enjoy, Derrick

I'm off to France is a few weeks - that Michelin site is very useful - thanks.

In the directions...

Montpellier 1: Toll: 4.80 EUR - I understand what that means

but

Montpellier 2: Ticket purchase - what does that mean?

Ticket purchase means that you'll just take a ticket (withou paying) at the toll, so you can give it to the next toll and have the price calculated according to where you're coming from. (hope it's clear!)

actually you can even find tolls in the middle of nowhere, miles away from any entry/exit. (then you'll have to pay again on the exit!)

top tips, thanks.

Our 1st stop will be Amboise, just east of Tour, in August.

1st time I went clockwise around Paris, but will try the Rouen (?) Lemans route this time.

Will remember to carry a few euros in the glove box for le frog pigs.

Liber-t - You get them from the Autoroute companies. Some companies offer discounts for their toll roads. Apparently the name for the tag is a "doofah" or "doofer".

Often at "large Peages" you'll see a cabin just after the toll booths with a "liber-T" (sp?) sign......
