If your mortgage is €557 and that was costing you £300 who did you use to get 1.856 to £ exchange they must be correcting the mistake by now giving you an exceptionally poor rate if €557 is now costing you £550 even at todays poor exchange €557 will not now cost you £550.
I got a commercial rate from my UK to French account this month of €1.17 this would mean your €557 would cost £476.06

They were only rough numbers, but you get my drift !! It wasnt quite as low as £300 but it wasnt far off. The last time I transferred some money I got 1.124 to the £ frown, I know its come down since then so im expecting the worse tomorrow. The money I send across also has a little bit extra to cover anything that might come out in the future, enough to cover my water and electric bills in Feb too. How do you transfer your money neil ?? I do think about how much the house costs in £ ted and I do like the fact that the property ive got is far larger than any property I would ever have in UK, never plan on owning a house in uk but thats neither here nor their. Army has its bonuses for housing and being only 28 im quite happy with teh one house !!

I'm with you in the depressed stakes D-I-A-B-L-O

Sold our properties in the UK last December (2007) when the rate was 1.40 decided not to bring the proceeds over as the rate was low and that we'd wait until it recovered.

1.06 now!!!!

At least we made the right decision as to which currency to run our business in!!

I have an account with Hifx who do very good rates. Usually much better than any Bank. Check them out.

I have used them a lot and they seem happy to deal in small(ish) amounts as well. Recently did one for £2000. For those needing to transfer pension payments on a monthly basis you can set an agreed figure at the beginning of a 1 year period and they'll guarantee it for a year. Mate of mine set his last June time at around 1.26 which sounded terrible then but sounds pretty good right now. He's rather hoping that things perk up by May next year when he's got to re-negotiate.

Our mortgage has exited it's fixed introductory period, we've gone from paying £400pm to £900pm in a couple of months...

Crippling.

Tempted to sell to make a quick buck, but how is the property market in France?

Market is very slow although I don't think it's been hit as hard as the UK. If people ask realistic prices things do still move - I know three people in our immediate circle of friends/contacts who've sold in the last 4 months. Definite slow-down of new Brits arriving recently, certainly in our area.

Was your fixed term less than a year it seems no time at all that you bought your place?
That is some increase in payments so glad we dont have a mortgage.

Not sure you will make a quick buck...........

Bought it last November, so it was the first year fixed. Changed now from 600 euros to 900 Euros (ish).

Still glad we have the pad, I spent Boxing Day out in our woods with my chainsaw biggrin No phone, no internet...

Sorry guys but I get paid in Euro's. Bloody great at the moment.
Better than the rate back in 1995 when it was 1,28 Marks to the Pound (€1.14) biggrin
