Assuming you were doing 73mph in a 70kph zone the fine would be a lot.

Assuming that you were in a UK car, then you are unlikely to be troubled.

I've had a couple of static cameras catch me over the past few years on English plates and not had a ticket.

Unfortunately the same isn't true of the mobile Gendarme powered radar guns found up by Calais ... as my father-in-law found out they take credit cards and speak English :-)

Having spoken with a Sagem engineer last year, I understand that cameras are set 5kph above the speed limit, no matter what the limit.

So I do not understand why you saw a flash, but am fairly certain that you are unlikely to hear anything.

For the time being, I agree that it is hand-held lasers that are, potentially, a much bigger problem for future visits.

How do you know you were doing 73? - have you received a ticket in the post stating that or are you just relying on what you saw on your speedo?

Normally it's 90 euros and 3 points. Can be more depending on the speed, and the points at present don't count on a UK licence; but.... they do stay registered on the French system so if you ever change your licence they are ready and waiting! Also I believe that if you were to tot up enough points for a ban (even holding the UK licence)then when they check against your name (after stopping you again for instance) they can take your licence and impound the vehicle on the spot.

Who knows - don't want to be the first to confirm it though!

I've been flashed in France once and three times in Germany and never received a ticket.
Are you sure there were no other cars ? They will not waste there time over 3km/h.

You should be out of concern.
Got flashed at 55kph instead of 50kph two years ago and never received anything.
Many flashes end up in the dustbin because either the radar did not function properly, which happens many more often than what most people think, or the picture cannot be "exploited".

In France you start with points and lose points for offences. Small excess in speed is only 1 point deduction.

Not here - I've never seen less than 3 points taken off (luckily not personally but I've lots of French friends who seem to get nabbed unfortunately)- also they give little or no lattitude on the camera or jumelle detected limits, I know soneone who got 3 points and 90 euros for 93 in a 90!!! - I've kept my UK licence (not strictly legal) as at present the points don't work on a foreign licence, but IMO it's only a matter of time before they will.....

My sister lives in France (Limoges) and she got speeding fine €90 and 1 point deduction for 5kph over was driving on UK licence but was forced to change to French licence due to the conviction (was driving French registered car)
If your licence has a UK address that you no longer live at or can be contacted via it is not valid, so as you say not strictly legal.

I still have a UK address - plus "I go back to the UK every 2 or 3 weeks, sometimes for 3 months sometimes for less officer so it's impossible to change my licence for a French one as the English police ask me to do the same thing!; I keep a French registered car here and have a UK registered car there, what a dilemma" - "bugger off Engishman you are causing too much confusion for us poor French rozzers" (or similar in French) reply the gendarmes -- for now.....

You wont hear anything, and they wont pursue it.

Flashed a number of times in France (allegedly) and never heard a thing. If you get done by a gendarme that's a different matter, I've had two 90 euro fines in the past year. frown

If you get done be apologetic, speak French if you can, and have the right documents, then they will treat you ok.
