Hi,

Am going for a 2 week holiday to Southern France with my girlfriend of 8 yrs next summer an hope to propose to her on the trip.

We were planning on staying in Kyriads as they are cheap and seem fairly well liked.

But onto the reason for the thread i want to have a suprise hotel booked and a memorable day planned for her and propose.

Any Hotel recommendations and things to do?????

We were wanting stay arround Nice/Monaco for the bulk of the trip but we take time out on the way down.....

Any ideas would be great!!!

Cheers in advance

Hi,

Bit of a late response but hopefully of some use. We have stayed on the French Riviera 3 times, on two of those occasions we drove there. We have never stayed in Monaco purely because it is very expensive, but it is very easy to visit on the train or car from just about anywhere else along the coast. We have stayed in Antibes, Cannes and Nice.

My personal favourite place is Cannes, not as busy as Nice, but more to see and do than Antibes. However, on this occasion we were on a tight budget and so we only had a very cheap hotel, but no complaints. If that's what your after it was the http://www.hotel-esterel-cannes.cote.azur.fr

If you go to Cannes, don't worry if you have a hotel with no parking. You can get week long car park passes from the Tourist Information which are not extortionate.

I can recommend the Hotel Windsor in Nice. http://www.hotelwindsornice.com Only a short walk from the sea front, restaurants, bars etc. A longer walk from the old town and harbour though. But it has nice modern decor and a lovely tropical garden where they serve breakfast/drinks etc.

Antibes is a touch smaller but still nice, especially if you like looking at big yachts. We stayed at http://www.hotel-djoliba.com/index_uk.html which has parking, pool and is half board.

I would happily go back to any of the above.

As for somewhere to propose?... Under star light on the promenade at Nice, Cannes or Antibes should do the job. But I would say that you could do a lot worse than stopping off in Epernay on your way down. Stay here http://www.villa-eugene.com/ and visit a few Champagne houses. This was a recomendation I got off Pistonheads for our honeymoon and the Mrs. absolutely loved it.

Hope this is of help.

I have done a number of drive holidays down to Nice as well.
I would certainly recommend a stop over in Avignon.
On the coast St Raphael is also well worth a visit.
And if you dont mind a bit of zig zag driving Strasbourg and Geneve are also very nice. (and worthy locations for a romantic proposal)

Go to Menton or over the border to Rapallo.

Both lovely Riviera towns far better and less spoilt IMHO than Cannes, St Tropez or Nice.
