We're transferring our cars to French plates and changing to French insurance...

We were under the impression that car insurance was cheaper in France than UK...but we've had our 1st quote (AGF) in and it's over double!!

Is this the norm and are we wrong in our impression or can anyone recommend someone for us to speak to?

My sister French registered her cars when they moved over to Limoges and she also said the insurance was at least double (but it does include breakdown cover for EU). You also after you have paid to registered the cars not got any road tax to pay and the Control Technic (MOT) is only every 2 years.
I have a house in the Alps and use a LR 90 for winter but keep it UK reg and bring it back and forth for MOT etc (also saves you getting speeding tickets in the post!)

We use Pacifica with Credit Agricole and have found them to be favourable.

Because of being over 50, 60% NCDs (which translated into 50% NCDs here)and cars always garaged, we did not think we paid too much in the UK either.

Strange - I've insured my Porsche for way less than in the UK with AXA, also I re-registered 2 motorbikes (english originally) and they too were way cheaper here than in London (also with AXA). However I did think the insurance for my wifes SMART was expensive and also for an A3 I had before the porker. What car are you insuring ouit of interest?

eljeffo - have you got a contact with Axa?

We're trying to insure a Nissan X Trail at the moment (and then a Land Rover Defender)

My sister was rural in UK so insurance would have been much cheaper than your London premiums in the first place.

Only my local broker here in the SW - no one special. As per my earlier post - I didn't find them that cheap for regular cars (like my Audi or our Smart) so not sure how competetive they would be for a 4x4. As a comparison - I was paying 600 euros for a new Audi A3 - fully comp with breakdown cover - but only 850 euros for an 18 month old Porsche 997S, work that one out! I was quoted 1400 quid for the porker in London.

I've left my UK registered Range Rover on UK plates and with UK insurance as it was cheaper to insure there (but with road tax hikes in the UK for gas guzzlers I may change that position as the total annual cost will be less if I registered the car here but don't have the road tax to pay).

So many complications so little time......
