hello all,

just wondering if there are any PHers from the moselle department.

was called into my boss' office yesterday and he's scouting around for someone to send over to our site in the area - between metz and the luxembourg border.

i'm potentially interested but need to research it first. wouldn't mind relocating and having a central base to explore europe. i don't speak the lingo but am still in my 20's so plenty of time to learn i guess. have been to brittany and paris, but other than that france is a bit of a mystery.

so, any pointers for me? i have no idea what taxes etc. i'd be expected to pay. property websites would be good, as would a general guide to the area, and in particular the part nr to luxembourg. what is metz like as a city? reims looks nice but don't fancy a 360km commuting roundtrip! the idea of a place in the countyside appeals but i don't think i'm ready to leave the city yet smile

also, what sort of time would i be looking at on a fast train from metz-paris? the OH is a fashion designer so that'd be her only realistic chance of work.

any info. gratefully received!

cheers,
phil.

Hi Phil,

Even if I live in Paris now, I was raised and went to University in the area.

Metz is a pretty nice city ( http://tourisme.mairie-metz.fr/ ) and you don't want to leave in Reims. Knowing the later as well, you're better of in Metz...

My experience of taxes living in London compared to France is the following:
a) "council tax" higher in London compared to anywhere I know in France,
b) "income tax" higher if you are single, lower if you are married. You have all sorts of taxes on the salary but it is more France overall. Roughly 25% is taken off your payslip and you pay 5/10/20/30/40% on the remaining over 3 payments during the year. Good thing is, you pay in 2008 for 2007 income meaning that if you move in France January 09, you will not be paying for French income in 2008 (as you don't have any) and will not pay in the UK either...

I would mail you some weblink but, as a new member, I can't use this function. Feel free to drop me a line with more questions and I'll try to answer them.

Regs,
Johan

thanks for that johan.

found out a little more info. the position requires a minimum commitment of 3 years, and is a secondment so i will be paid in the UK. bit of a shame as i liked the sound of a year living tax free!

have the option of either:

a] selling my house and formal relocation to Fr.

b] work paying my UK mortgage, leaving it empty, with me paying rent/mortgage on a place in Fr.

c] renting out my UK house and work contributing to the french rent/mortage. sounds good to me!

we have a guy out there i would be swapping with. i don't need to make up my mind until january - leaving plenty of time to investigate. not sure i want to do another 3yrs in a similar role, but lifestyle/location may sway me!

no worries with PM johan, just post the links on here.

cheers,
phil.

Hi Phil,

Sorry for the dealy I am on a Business trip with some time-dif

For housing try this search engine, works for entire france so I paste the link direct to "House/flat" "any/size" "sorted price descending" in "metz" (this view includes some suburb): http://www.seloger.com/recherche.htm?ci=570463&amp...
House price is going down these days so I wouldn't suggest to buy.

That is for housing, any other specific request for which I could paste links?
