If Caterham can give you a full EU certificate of conformity for the car then there is no problem. If not, forget it.

Know Valbonne extremely well yes Spend half my life working in Sophia, eating in Biot and staying in Villeneuve Loubet.

You will be wanting to join Club Lotus France then? €60 per annum.

They have an insurance specialist called Laurent Sauzeau who is an agent here in Saumur. He speaks English quite well and also organises their Le Mans events.

My understanding is that Caterhams are holomogated in France and there are lots of home built cars supplied by their French agent Martin.

There are a couple of very good french sites with a lot of information.

But and here is the big but, it still seems to be pretty random as to how easy it is to do the importation process.

All the paperwork correct and the girl behind the counter has had a bad day and you get rejected.

It's worth having all the paperwork that you think you might need, go to the office and ask the person behind the counter to write down EVERYTHING you need. Go back an hour later and make sure you see the person who wrote the list and give them everything.

That way you avoid the hit and miss of it all.

you'll need to find a reasonable UK insurer to insure it for you as teh French can't/won't until you'vef at least started the process of gaining french reg!

If you do decide to keep the car in France on UK plates, Generali will insure you in France whilst you register your car, an whilst you should do this within 6 months if it takes a couple of years longer due to red tape they seem happy to continue to provide their service.

Years ago it was 3 months IIRC.
Last year it was 1 month. (condition stated on Quittus Fiscal from declaration of EU import)

You'll be very close to me then.
Welcome to the area.
Temporary or for good?

Registering a UK is posible and there's a French Caterham club which is best to contact (if you speak the lingo).
Here's how to do it. Its painfull but possible

I lived in 71 and 74 for four years .I had a Merlin and the MX Lightning that I still own .It was impossible to get them approved over there ,so I kept them insured and mot`d in the U.K with a company providing unlimited green card cover .I never had any problems .
