We used www.vefuk.com - they have connections with a number of estate agents and compile a shortlist for you to see when you visit - according to your requests.
They found exactly what we were looking for. They then act as local agents for you in France and translate most of the paperwork. Not cheap, but they remove all the hassle.

Me and the missus saw ours as it was in the same hamlet as my parents but I reckon taking a holiday in the area you like and popping in to some 'immobiliers' and getting some info on houses for sale in the area is a good guide as to whats in the area and what you would like. Excuse for a holiday too !!

Take a look around Gap, Serres and Nyons.
Much under-rated part of France.
I just sold a lovely 1791 stone cabanon there.
Ageed we have a converted stone barn at Lus La Croix Haute off the N75 the area is lovely/stunning summer and winter (just back this week after 10 days skiing).Much under-rated part of France.

Had our place for years but heard this is quite good recently http://fr.123immo.com/
Chatting to a few people over easter it seems a price adjustment is on the horizon, lots of optimistic pricing is being reviewed, maybe just my area, I am in the Vienne region but seems a lot on for sale and its not moving.

Buying direct from the Notaire is a good idea, try http://www.notaires.fr/notaires/notaires.nsf/V_TC_...
