205 Gti - Help
Discussion
Hello,
I have been on this site loads of times and have always had great advice.
So I am hoping someone can help me now. I own a 1989 205 GTi 1.9.
She is absolutely standard except for the usual K&N Conversion to the air filter and a Piper road cam. She is lovely (like me!!). She has done 160,000 miles.
I have replaced most of her at some point in her life, batteries, discs, clutches, cam belts, alternators, seats, panels........you get the idea!!!
However, she is using oil now and is a little smokey at start up, which suggests she is getting a little worn in the engine department, I suspect piston rings etc.....
I guess an engine rebuild is needed, can anyone advise me if there is a company that can do this, and not rip me off, I mean.....they don't jet wash the engine and charge me £1000.....
Can anyone advise the best way forward, costs etc...
Many thanks
Rachel

Hello,
Does it blow smoke all the way through the rev range or do you only notice it when you pull away?
I ask as its probably more likely the valve stem seals are failing and leaking oil into the piston.
Usually happens once warm and idling in traffic.
Normally around £300 to replace - no need to remove the head if the garage you use have the proper tools.
You could try posting again on www.forum.205gtidrivers.com or in the french car forum on here rather than the french location forum!

Sounds like valve stem seals.
Leave it running idling until it's warm.
Get someone to stand at the rear.
Rev the engine upwards slowly and gently.
If the oil clears once you get to get to around 2.5k then I suspect it's the valve stem seals.
If it continues all the way to the redline then that would suggest the rings.
It's a pretty standard job for any mechanic but if you want a 205GTI specialist try

Sounds like valve stem seals. They do fail quite commonly, mine did at 66k miles.

It's a standard job for any mechanic, however if you're after a 205GTKI specialist then you could try
