Speed Limits in France

Bonjour!

I was wondering at what speed the police started to get interested on the motorways in France? Is there a rough benchmark at which (a) you will be pulled over and (b) you will get into serious trouble...?

Law says 50 km/h above the limit can lead to 6 months in jail, a €7500 fine, they take the car, and - cherry on the cake - a group session to sensibilise people on road safety.

In pratice don't push your luck too far behind 30 km/h above the limit. Foreigners can escape with just a fine when French people are harassed endless.

Friend just got done for 80kmph in a 50 limit. He had been studiously careful to observe limits, and then we went in to the final town of the day and bam!

€90 fine was something of a result!
