Touring around France ..... H E L P !
Discussion
Following this year's Le Mans, we (10 cars) are travelling down to the south of france via La Rochelle(?) and the Millhau Bridge.
We will have two overnighters on the way down with the first probably in La Rochelle. The second night would preferably be within a few hours of cannes/nice/monaco.
After a night or two on the coast we will take the route de napoleon north to grenoble and then on toward paris and home.
Does anyone have any route or hotel suggestions ?
Many, many thanks in anticipation.

just carry on south from millau throug to the A9 on the coast the road from millau gets really nice with a few tunnels (and speed camera's). once you drop down from The plateau you pick up the climate and really cool scenery in the herault. Just a question why Cannes etc, the weather etc is just as good on the med from Montpellier throug to the Sapnish border and there are some truly amazing routes.
Have to agree with Sortie 10 I drove down to the south of France in August, took the route de Napoleon south down to Cannes which was good, but I took the Route des Grandes Alpes from Menton (near Monaco)up to Geneva. The Route des Grandes Alpes was clearly the highlight of the trip . (I also played my James Bond collection CD for most of the Route des Grandes Alpes, it just felt right!)

thanks 'jimi ... our target is monaco on the 19th which is pre organised.
so if we continue along the coast along the A9/A54 into Marseille, and then along the minor coast roads from Marseille to Monaco, we should be ok ?
I think next year (2008) we will look at travelling due south into Bordeaux, "do" the Pyrennes and then home via the Santander/Bilbao ferry.
With the above in mind, i think we will be looking at a hotel/chateaux between Montpellier and Toulon .... any ideas ?
Many, many thanks.

Check out the Route des Grandes Alpes - runs from Menton (just east of Monaco) to Thonon on Lake Geneva. I have posted a review of this elsewhere on this site. Top driving, fab scenery.
Our current plan is to return from the south via the Route d Napoleon 'twixt Cannes and Grenoble, and then head home via Paris, but i may be tempted to have a look at this ... thank you.

grateful thanks for the input, unfortunately we will have to choose only one of the two suggested routes.
I'll offer your music selection to the lads ....

I am doing a track day with the Almeras Club ( of Porsche Racing Fame) near Nimes in March. They appear to be a great bunch, if not this time, then may be next year could get a track day together with them when you are over. Re the Hotel/Chateau- loads to choose from, let me know waht sort of thing you are looking for.
Hi David.
Dont go via the coast to Cannes, you miss some of the best scenery and the best driving roads on the way there.
If you turn left at Millau, and follow the road through the Gorges du Tarn, its the same route Clarkeson et al used for their road tests.
Then cut acros country and head for the Gorges du Verdon. following the way to the route Napoleon from there.
If you get to the route Napoleon Via Grasse just above Cannes, stonking fast road and very challenging.
Stay away from the coast route as it,s populated by "knobs" at that time of year.
If things go acording to plan i shall travelling to my place in the Tarn from Le Mans.
You are more than welcome for a glass or two
