Hi all,

I found out earlier today that i had been accepted for a role at CERN on the Swiss/French border, with the opportunity to choose residence in either country.

On the balance of probability i will end up living in France due to the much lower cost of living.

I have, and will have, plenty of questions surrounding making the move so hopefully i can stick them all in this thread.

Firstly, if i want to use my UK registered car in the country for the first few months whilst i settle, how can i get insurance?

Thanks
Ben

Are you looking to keep the car and register it in FR or send it back to the UK? If you're living here permanently, then the rules say that you should start the immatriculation process within 1 month of the car being imported. No doubt your employers should be able to help with info and a handholder to point you the right direction with French admin but when you move to FR, you can get your car imported here tax free if it's been yours for more than 6 months and you include it on the customs declaration for your worldly goods when you move here. Insurance wise, certainly there's no issue insuring the car with a French insurer IF you're importing it, but be aware that it will only be for a month or two and you will have to show you're going through the process of registering it here. Good luck!

Thank you.

The plan was to bring my RHD Auris for maybe 3-6 months, whilst i settle in and work out what parking spaces i have etc, and then do a one way trip back to the UK and sell it to "we buy any car" or similar before buying a LHD car.

I moved to the Continent (pre-Brexit) with a UK RHD car. As I think you've alluded to, the decision to switch and buy LHD locally is probably a good one.

Do you want to be a full on French resident or a UK resident on a work visa. How do you want to pay tax, which medical system do you want to be covered by,are you moving with family, are you renting or buying?

The car question is by far the easiest to answer.

My thoughts exactly.

Having the car here for less than 6-months should not be a problem.

You are the male equivalent on Emily in Paris. You will benefit from a Golden opportunity in your life.

Undoubtedly a few turds will fall in your lap on the way, but get over it and look at the upside.

There are three great cities in the world to live. London, Paris and New York. Sure, you could earn more in Dubai, or even Hong Kong, but really, you are walking on air.

Just be certain to make the most of it - and put the thoughts about the car to one side - for the time being.

There is, but they're referred to as Procedure RSV - repair superior to value. They generally are only bought by the trade or for parts or export by amateurs due to the need for it to be assessed by an expert before, during and after the repairs are done, and it's a rather closed shop in Fr. The carte grise ( V5 equivalent ) is blocked so that the car / bike cannot be registered again in France unless it's passed the professional check. There used to be a bike shop that would do the checks for about 300€ if you bought a scrapped bike from them but they seem to have stopped doing it now.

Thank you. During the process of buying a car do i need to worry about Procedure RSV then? Or is it safe to assume all run of the mill cars have a clean history? Thanks

When you go to buy a car/ bike ask the vendor for an up to date certificate de situation administrative ( non gage ) - this tells you if there's finance outstanding or someone else has a claim on the vehicle like joint owners. As to the damage marker, that's not something I'm aware of.

It used to be completely opaque to buy a second hand car in France, but things are improving slowly ... You can now get some history through the government official site : HISTOVEC, which gives you number of owners, if it was a demo/rental car, if anything seems odd with mileage ....

https://histovec.interieur.gouv.fr/histovec/home

Unfortunately to get the info you need the seller to do it (as you need some of his personal details to access the report)
