80 in a 90 zone, flashed..?

N520, shortly before the A20 just north of limoges, downhill, signs said 90kph, I'm doing 80, I get flashed by the roadside box. I doubled back, defo 90, rolled past at 70 second time and it didn't want to know. Will I be fined for sticking to the limit..?

Exact same thing happened to me on the N520 between Bellegarde and Family Village, was pootling along with cruise set to 88 (so realistically doing 85/86 according to Waze) and got flashed by that new camera that looks like a huge multi-angular grey box there was nobody else around so it was my car. It was a nice sunny day too so no reduced limits in effect, never heard any more about it so I assume it was a problem with the camera.

Was it raining at the time? As Mike has pointed out, limits are 10km/h less when it's raining but I've never heard of anybody being done for this, so please do update us in a week or two if you hear anything. In my experience camera-generated tickets are sent within a week...I've just seen you're a UK resident, so I'd be amazed if you hear anything about this again! There has long been talk of reciprocal exchange of drivers details but it'll never happen (even less so since the brexit vote).

My neighbour was caught in a police speed check in the rain near Angouleme, he was doing 90 km/h and was done 90€ for exceeding the limit of 80 km/h as it was raining. To be fair it wasn't light rain but that was the first time he'd heard that the normal "N" road 90 limit was lowered to 80, he knew about the 130/110 limits on the autoroutes but not the 90/80 on normal roads.
I've wondered about this ever since he was fined, at what level of rain/wetness is the limit reduced? So, to be on the safe side I reduce to 80km/h at any level of rain much to the annoyance of the locals.
As an aside I saw the Gendarmes setting up a check on the N21north of Chalus in the pi**ing rain last week so can only guess it was for this purpose.

It's a bit subjective, but I use the same criteria as lighting up - i.e. if you are using your wipers.Having said that, I never drive any slower than normal in the wet. Dear god, an 80kph limit on most of our local roads round here (Lower Normandy) would be crazy!
No rain at the time, it was slightly showery later on the autoroute back to Paris. I was still at >10kph from the limit anyway... I sat at 110 the whole fricking way after that!

There's already been a lot of activity around here of late, on my last three trips up to Limoges there have been either complete stops of all cars (two Saturday's ago where there were three Gendrame vans, about 10 Gendarmes and two bikes at the Aixe-sur-Vienne roundabout with the D2000 doing checks on just about every car), speed traps or just vans/bikes cruising up and down the N21/D2000/N520. Just lately if someone flashes me to indicate there's something up ahead then I just turn off and go another way, I've got nothing to worry about it's just the hassle of being stopped and then lectured about changing my license to a French one which seems to happen every time I get stopped in a document check.
Yes I saw that strange shaped camera thingy the other day up near the family village.
I was wondering if it was a camera for lorries (80kph) (foreign) maybe? U.K. Plate.
I've never seen one like that before.
The police are hot in that area,wether it's due to a lot of foreign vehicles and with the airport being close. It was mayhem at the airport a few weeks ago when Macron flew in.
I tow a fair bit in that area and have been vigilant about my carte Gris etc for my trailor also.

There is an experimental site just outside Cergy Pontoise and there is a new camera whicgh is a tall box on a high pole.
Additionally be aware that there are now more Average Speed Cameras being deployed. They look like a firemans helmet on a pole.

I'm wrong, apparently. Since June, the UK has been providing the French government with driver details, allegedly. So if you are flashed in France you MAY get a ticket sent to you in blighty! This pre-supposes that anyone in charge in France can be arsed to do the necessary paperwork, but if anybody does get sent a ticket from France then please record it on this forum somewhere so that others can be aware! Personally I'd be amazed if it ever happens...
