When we have a spare day, and the weather is good (as it is now), we enjoy a trip tp Brantôme. I particularly like Au Fil de l'Eau on Quai Bertin for lunch, and the town itself, along with the surrounding countryside is pretty.

Over ten years living here (part time), we like to think we've done a fair bit of exploring, but I'm interested in suggestions of places which combine interest/nice surroundings with decent places to eat. It's somebody's birthday tomorrow, and a decent slap up feed followed by a gentle stroll would suit nicely I think.

So, bring on your nominations. Ideally we're looking to get there and back in a day, but will stay overnight if necessary. We are based between Rochechouart and La Rochefoucauld.

TIA

Hi Doofus,

I would lunch at 'Hotel de France' in St Pardoux La Riviere (24470) and then a short drive to St Jean de Cole for a wander around.

You could even call in to us in Piegut-Pluvier for a coffee if you have time!

You could try a different direction and head over to Nanteuil en Valle it's like a very charming listed village that has a superb restaurant named Auberge de L'Argentor. I have been using the place over the last 20 years .

Beside the restaurant there is a path that leads you to an arboretum which is beautiful for a shady walk alongside the river. The whole village is worth a walk about.

It's on the road between Champagne Mouton and Ruffec. A little over an hour from you.

Restaurant phone number is 05 45 31 85 20

You could also visit Condac which sits on the river Charente just outside Ruffec.

ETA. That Verrteuil sur Charente is only a couple of miles from Nanteuil which has is a very charming village with a stunning Chateau to visit.

Thank you. We know Nanteuil, but as far as we can remember, we've not eaten there.

St Emilion. Lunch suggestions;
Chai Pascal (cheap and simple)
Logis de Cadene (not cheap but incredible food)
Belles Perdrix (definitely not cheap but incredible food and very romantic views from the terrace in the grounds of a 1er GGC wine chateau).

Thank you. St Emilion would have been a fair trek, and we've spend a lot of time there in the past. smile

Just wanted to thank you again for this, VR. We took your advice; the Hotel de France has a joly decent carte, and we had a very good (and healthily portioned) lunch there. This will definitely be added to our list of decent places to eat, so thanks for the recommendation.

It turns out we've been to St Jean de Cole before, but it was nice to revisit, even if it was a bit warm for too much strolling about after such a big lunch smile

Two weeks ago we rented a canoe and floated down the river from Vitrac to Beyrac. There are billions of companies that offer this service - we used Butterfly Canoes. There is a fairly strong current in your favor which means that you can just paddle leisurely and the river will do most of the work. You'll pass the chateaux of Castelnaud, Fayrac, and Baynac, as well as the towns of Domme and La Roque Gageac. It's really quite beautiful.

Sincé we were with a fairly large group, we had lunch pre-arranged in Castelnaud at a place called La Plage where they treated us well. You can pull your canoe up on the beach and the restaurant/café is right there.

We had fantastic weather and really enjoyed the trip. More details available if you're interested
