My car has a serious engine problem that I will try to repair over the coming months. When I spoke with my insurer, AXA, to cancel the insurance, and save some money, they told me that even if a vehicle is not used, it must be insured under French law.

Is this correct ?

I don't trust anything they say so thought I'd check with you guys.

Thanks
Paul

Normally you need to provide a certificate de cessation to stop your insurance which is normally only issued if you sell or scrap the car.Insurers over here require three months written notice otherwise, although i believe this particular piece of stupidity is being addressed by certain insurers.I stand to be corrected, but that was certainly the case when i was last in a similar position.

I've not time to have a proper look around, but I sold a car recently and when checking out the procedure, noticed something about vehicles that are off the road. Like Russ, I've always thought that they must be insured. Like school children smile.
Important- if your car is uninsured and for example, catches on fire and burns down your garage and house, your buildings insurance won't pay up.

Thanks guys. The info I have gleaned suggests they are correct, I just don't trust anything they say as they have pulled the wool over my eyes on a couple of things already !

Cheers

All the above is correct but now you don't have to wait until renewal to cancel, just give notice and move insurer.
