Could anyone confirm that I'm understanding this right.....

If I buy a used car with a CT that has less than a year left to run, I'll need to get a new one before I can register it in my name?

Sister in France needs an uber cheap runaround and have found a French registered car just returned to Blighty for the right numbers, would save me a lot of hassle if I can make it work but CT expires this year.

Thanks in advance, any help much appreciated.

To register the car in the new owners name (sister) the car must have more that 18 months CT.(mot)

Thats why most sellers get a new CT so to make it an attractive sale.

Some, but not all, prefectures are accepting under 6 month old UK MOT's for registration.

Nothing to stop you getting a French registered car MOT'd.

I won't start a new topic for now.
Looking at buying a french registered car (rhd) then bring it back here, register it mot and probably sell on. The car is approx 1990 vintage. I will Google search but just wondered if anyone has done similar. Thanks and happy Saturday.

It's pretty straightforward to re-import a French car to the UK, and more than likely you'll get the original registration back if it hasn't been re-assigned. Look at the DVLA website for details...

I've just discovered that collectors cars (with a 5 year CT) must have had a new CT within 6 months of the sale (rather than 18 months left). A minor point, but useful to know...

A word of caution. I bought a classic Mini on fleabay and got the car for a very good price. The car was CTd within last 6 months so all good.
I have finally, after 12 month delay, got the engine out of the mini to do a refresh. I know that a CT, like an MOT, is a spot check so no guarantee if the state the next day, however some of the things I have seen on the car would suggest that the CT was not done very stringently. For example drive shaft boots inner and outer, both track rod end gaiters disintegrating. These are things that do go with time but with very low miles since CT it would suggect they werent't looked at very closely.

I wouldn't disagree about being cautious, but I maintain my old Punto myself, and although I check brake wear and so on before the CT, I rely on Dekra to find anything obvious under the car, and what you said struck a cord, because on two separate occasions they've told me about drive shaft gaiter leaks, and on another about general corrosion under the floor.

They haven't picked up intermittent faults fortunately; electric pas sometimes cutting out on full lock, dip lamps occasionally going out when main beam comes on, the clutch pedal not returning after a few miles......perhaps, as one of the Dekra guys has an even older Punto they just thump it and it's "repaired".

Are the testers qualified mechanics? I've explained a few things to them in the past that they didn't seem to be up to speed on.

In France there is a very strict separation of garage services and ControlTechnique (MOT). Not allowed to mix the 2

It is true. I sold my classic (1956) Pop very recently and the new owners were refused an update to the carte gris without a new CT. the old one had about three years left on it.

Sorry I misread 'must have had' as 'must have' however the rule for all vehicles is a CT less than 6 months old not how long the existing one has to run so it having 3 years of 5 remaining was irrelevant and the reason your buyer was unsuccessful in trying to change the registration.

Hello,

Sorry, didn't find english translation of these pages.

Foreign CT validity :

French CT validity :

General rule, CT/MOT/whatever must be less than 6 months old to sell a car.

A less than 6 months old CT/MOT is critical for registration not for a sale.
