North through / avoiding ROUEN
Discussion
Having driven down just before Le Mans 24h through Rouen & having got totally lost in the city looking for advice on going back up from La Rochelle.
Southbound, I thought it would surely be fine, been a problem for months, thousands of vehicles need to go south every day - it`ll be signed clearly. Well it was, but there was only one `Le Mans` sign with a bent arrow on it pointing God knows where at a complex junction with vehicles straddling lanes & blocking exits. Poor job Monsieur `I do the signs in Rouen`.
Is it any better going north or can you offer an alternative?
Thanks if you can help.

To be honest, I would say it is much worse going north. I have had no trouble heading south, but knew where I had to go at the complex junction you mentioned.
You can pass to the west and north by driving through a town called Yvetot. You will miss Rouen completely but it is further. Depending on the time of day, driving through Paris is not as bad as you might imagine, assuming you are heading towards Calais.

Hello & thanks for the advice. In the end I went up with no problems at all having decided to `take a left` & went over Pont Normandie on the Le Havre route I know. I think I saw that as a potential southbound diversion on a battered temporary sign about 60 miles N of Rouen on our way down.
It was nice to be back on French roads, thougth the toll booths now seem to have many more automated stations than I recall which made me wonder what on Earth happens if the ticket jams or soemthing else goes wrong.
I thought I might check the tyre pressures at one of the aires on the way - in return for the rubber hose to connect to the compressor the nice lady at the till wanted my passport as security!
Only 2 croissants left....
