Guys, I have looked with a French work colleague on the French version of our UK dvla but as ever it is a little unclear.
Could someone just confirm the process of selling a used car within France please.
My understanding is that I take all documents for the car, my proof of address, passport or ID, utility bill, sale of receipt to new owner, and complete a form and take all to my local prefecture.
I understand I have 15 days to do this after selling this Saturday.
Can all of this be done by post or do I have to go in person, I am Calais new owner is Brittany .
Could someone kindly confirm the process.

Thanks in advance.

You can fill in the forms on line and print out all 3 copies. You, buyer and Prefecture. The buyer has to sign all 3 copies.
You also give the Carte Gris to the buyer with two lines across (like an old cheque) and write Vendu, the date and time and make sure that it covers the bottom part, and sign it.
You do not have to visit the Prefecture post will do.

I have just sold a car that I previously imported to France, but I've sold it to a UK resident who is going to re-import it back to the uk.

I have written 'vendu' across the carte gris and given it to the purchaser, and the car is back in the uk. Should I have completed the form too? I haven't...

As far as my experience, you always have to fill out the three forms, particularly important from your point of view to inform the prefecture you are no longer the owner of the car.

I have another question - my car is registered in France at the moment and I need to register it in Italy now (first in the UK, then in France and now here - I need to stop moving!!!) Anyway, is there a form I need to complete and send to the prefecture for this too?

Thanks!

No...but !

There is no official procedure to be followed when exporting a car from France however you will have to give your insurance company some evidence that it's been exported, sold, or scrapped in order for them to allow you to cancel the insurance.

The easiest thing is to send them a copy of a certificat de cession saying that you've sold it but name Tom Mix or Harry Pepper as the new owner and for good measure make up an address for them somewhere in another country whistle

Great, thanks for the reply - that's good to know.

Is it just me, or is everything so much easier in the UK than anywhere else?!!

Funny you should mention the insurance issue, that is the half the reason for selling our little KA, we several cars registered in France that we have now put on UK plates, trying to cancel the insurance (you have to give a minimum of three months notice to cancel unless the premium has increased more than 10% from memory) is a nightmare even when proving you have exported the car by way of a UK log book and had all communication via recorded delivery which of course they didn't get and the carrot on the cake is that this is all for my recently deceased mother who they are threatening to take to court despite again being sent the death certificate via recorded delivery, we have even had the local insurance agent not passing on funds and information regarding cancelations etc.
I love France but in most things they are 20 years behind us, I would imagine in most admin involved roles you could cut the work force by 70%

My experience is quite different. I insure our french-registered cars through AXA and when I phoned the other day to tell our agent that I had sold and exported one of them a few days back he actually asked me the exact date so that he could refund any extra premium that might have been paid. I didn't have to give him anything else to terminate the insurance.

Send a copy of a cessation document. I don't suppose that they report back to the Prefecture.
They have to have a piece of paper.

This was all through AXA and there agent, I think the problems were caused between the agent and AXA, I understand agent has since run off with funds and shut the office.
