My gf and I are contemplating doing a 3-6 month stint living in France in the next year or so to "try it out", possibly with the view of a medium term move out there. We're both lucky in that currently her job means she can work from home all the time, and I'm able to get contracts with a significant WFH component with a bit of effort and a bi monthly EasyJet commute to London for a few days isn't an outrageous proposition.

The area we're looking at would be Carros/Gattieres/Vence - I know the Cote d'Azur fairly well as my mother has lived there for the last 13 years. I was wondering if people that are also based in/near that area (I'm pretty sure I've noticed a few PHers do in various threads) have any tips/advice.

1) Is renting in France pretty straight forward like the UK?
2) What are utility bills/council tex etc like?
3) So long as I can get appropriate cover from my UK insurance, would there be any issues on the French side regarding bringing one or both the cars out?
4) Any other general thoughts?

It reads more like an extended holiday where you just both happen to be able to work remotely. As you are not going to be considered as a fiscal resident then a lot of these things wont concern you. I have family in Nice who spend time 50/50 between there and Asia and usually rent out the property while they are away. You will probably find many other people in the same situation who will happily arrange 6 month rentals. They would be liable for the taxes etc and utilities too (but will include in rent...)
Can't imagine there would be any issues with the cars either as you would not be resident.

If I remember correctly, if you live in France for more than 6 months a year then France will tax you a % of your global income (nice socialist tax) no matter if earned and tax already paid in the country it was earned.

Was one thing I read about recently whilst considering a move somewhere nicer than central London for outdoor space.

I'll need to investigate!

Many websites, here's one example:

Should give some idea of pricing and the interest in doing it off-season! Most agencies are working with a typical rental period of a couple of weeks so they will do a better deal for a longer term.

For general information try the Anglo Info website, seems pretty reliable from the bits of info that I've used (I moved to near Paris 7 years ago).http://france.angloinfo.com/

Most Uk insurance companies only allow you up to 90 days in any one trip so would suggest you contact your insurer to check on this first.

Council taxes etc are fairly cheap in France compared to UK, think you will find it fairly easy to get a rent for a 6 month period.

Good luck with your trial period.

If you are thinking of six months I wouldn't worry too much about becoming mired in the French income tax system.
Renting is a bit more complicated than in the UK because, unless it is an informal arrangement, you have to take over formal responsibility for the local rates, water and electricity charges but it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.
Bon chance...
