Evening chaps - need to get down to Le Mont Dore on a Saturday in September from Le Touquet. Google is telling me that through Paris (using the D7) is the best route but what's the reality?

Also, looking at a stopover from Mont Dore on the way to Pyrenees (Arties) going via Millau. Looking at Carcassonne but any other recommendations?

Beziers or Narbonne could be options, depends on what you want to stay in , lodge type place or B&B.

Carcassone is very nice.

As far as the route goes I go to Beauvais, Melun Fontenbleu Montargis Moulins Nevers and then straight down to Clermont Ferrand. I don't use toll roads but the road down to CF is quite speedy. I've used this for many years, the route through Paris is OK, if you are used to Paris driving!!

And using the above route gets a trip to Nevers if you want too.

Lower down you can visit

Many thanks guys....easily doable in a day in a convoy of 8 cars? (with the inevitable faffing about/fuel stops/fag breaks etc hehe )

Worth a look, if you are looking for a break just to the west of Nevers is the "boat lift" carrying boats between the Loire & a canal- interesting to watch in a pretty part of France. IIRC there is a bar/hotel called Le Grenouillere (or similar) - translating as the frog catcher.
