Providing that you can demonstrate that you have been resident and own the vehicle and that all local taxes have been paid, then you should be OK.

If you are simply using Monaco to avoid paying VAT, then you will probably have problems.

No I'm not resident, I've been offered a second hand car there. If I bought in France I could import vat free to the uk as part of the eu. I appreciate Monaco isn't in the eu but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microstates_and_the_E... seems to suggest it is for vat purposes.

Wondered if anyone has tried it?

The two things you need to watch:

Monaco does not use the French Contrôle Technique, they have their own one issued by the Service de Roulage. If you're buying from a dealer they should be able to provide a new CT.

A fair percentage of the cars in Monaco are not EU versions. Make sure you check the certificate of conformity.
