Hi,

Just moved to France and was wondering what the options for health insurance are.

We moved from Switzerland just across the border to France, and now are struggling to find an insurance which will take her on.... shock horror! Fully understandable though.

Anyway, current options are:
a) get raped by the current insurer who says that because she now lives in Switzerland, her health insurance policy is 451.30CHF/month
b) find a french insurer who will take her.

I have no idea how health in France works, so if someone could fill me in, that would be good.

The first question is,are you going to be working in France and paying your taxes in france ?
If so then you will be entitled to a Cart Vitale that on average covers about 80 to 100% depending what health treatment is needed and on top of that you can buy a top up insurance to cover the rest.

More info to follow.

Hi, thanks for your reply!

We work in Switzerland and pay tax in Switzerland but switzerland pays a small %age of the tax to France under double taxation rules.

I am starting from a complete carte Blanche... I had only just got my head around all the rules and regs in Switzerland!

Try MAIF, they are very good in France

Noted you've just moved into France. Could that be the Haute Savoie?

Yep, we live in a small village called Neydens 3km from Swiss border. Fairly perfect actually and twice the size of house for less cash.

Nice and close for Geneve as a frontalier. Have just returned from 9days in Annecy. Having known the Haute Savoie for nearly 20 years, was very shocked to hear news of Chevaline shooting.

Yes, absolutely shocking. Terrible for everyone involved, and seems absolutely cold blooded. It is a beautiful area, we often go to Annecy for a little day trip. Lovely place.

I am checking out your suggestion for health insurance :-)

When I first moved to France a few years ago, it took almost a year to get my carte vitale. I used an expat medical insurance from April Medibroker that was reasonable in cost.

April is also quite big in France, but was almost 3 times the price than the British office.

Problem is, I think we are going to end up just having to be bummed for her by the current Swiss insurance because nobody will insure a woman who is already pregnant unless they have been a member for over 10months (for obvious reasons and if I am honest, quite understandable).

As soon as the baby is born, we can just switch the insurance to Bupa expat, and in the mean time apply for the Carte Vitale.

You will only be able to join the French health system if you are working here or have an S1(was E106) from the country you are currently insured in, Switzerland presumably.

Outside of that it's private insurance !
