Hi,
It depends where you want to live and the budget you have.
If you want the true Paris experience then you can take an appartment in Paris and the metro / RER is very good to connect from almost anywhere into La Defense.
If you want to live further out then clearly the further out the cheaper with the exception of some pockets of very high prices.
The key issue here is connection to La Defense. The RER which is the Paris area commuter train service is very good into La Defense. It is called RER line A and you can see on a map the main towns it serves.
http://www.ratp.fr/informer/pdf/orienter/f_plan.ph...

If you look at RER Line to A1 to Saint Germain en Laye then any of the towns from Ruel Malmaison onwards are in general very nice places and about 25mins on the RER. You will see in many of the advertisments 5min RER this relates to ease of acces to the RER station.
Searching for "Immobillier" in any of thoose towns will find lots of agents with lots of place " a louer" for rent.
Most french sites talk about size by Metres squared and number of bedrooms. You do not say if you are on your own or with family but there are a couple of international schools out on that line at ST Germain en Laye, Lycee International and at Croissy sur Seine, the British School of Paris. Croissy is where I live and is quite a big expat community.
Of course if you are prepared to commute for a much longer time or to drive into Paris then you can find some very grand place further away.

We're in Le Vesinet and the RER A line is actually pretty good, La Defense is also one of the best connected stations, and agree with everything advised above ...

Abbotts, nice to see a fellow Caterham owner close by, I'm just finishing building one as a track day toy.

Hi Abbott, we're in Le Peq, Vesinet. About a 15mins walk from the RER station near Charmettes.

Would be good to see your Caterham and any advice from you would help whilst I continue to build mine!

Don't rule out the other branch of RER A that goes to La Defense - Houilles/Carrieres sur Seine are likely to be cheaper and also have a different 10 minute train connection to the centre of Paris (less likely that both go on strike!). I live there and can recommend it for a relatively down to earth suburb. Maisons Laffitte is more upmarket and closer to the international schools and has a lot more of a country town feel to it.

I have colleagues that live in Sartrouville and like it, but I can't say that I'm that impressed by it.

The Transilien train line runs out to Versailles from La Defense as well - see www.transilien.com
