Guys

My son's Mother-in-Law is thinking of moving to the UK and wonders what happens with her pension and what are the peculiarities of the tax system.

Is she taxed there, here or both ?
How should she arrange payment etc. Any other tips she should know.

Obviously 1000' have moved here before but she is not finding any information to help her.

The plan is a trial rental in Nov / Dec then start to look for somewhere permanent.

Thanks for any replies.

If she becomes a permanent resident in the UK then she will become tax resident also. Because of the double-tax agreement between France and the UK she will not end up paying any more tax than she would have in France. There is a special form that will have to be completed in France and a copy of the form is sent to the UK tax authorities and a copy retained by the French Impots, this is to ensure that tax is paid on the income in one place or the other. Not entirely sure but it could be that she will be better off paying tax in the UK anyway, we did the reverse and there are some allowances that are tax free in the UK but are not in France so we pay more tax here than we would have done if we were taxed the UK.
