Some people go on boats, rent out balconies in order to see the grand prix, prices can be very high. Depends if you want to buy a ticket and be in the grandstand.

As far as train or car, depends how many you'll be and from where you're leaving.
Camping might be cheaper but might be a little of a hassle if you're going by train.

If you just want to see some racing at Monaco and not the F1 specifically, may I suggest the historic event a couple of weeks prior. Tickets are ~10% of the cost those for the F1 and you get two days of racing for that rather than 2 hours. Other than that I'd suggest fly to Nice, grab a hire car, stay outside Monaco and catch a train in.

I sit on the bank under the Palace for free (with thousands of other people)you get this sort of view:

its just above the Rasscase and looks up the start finish straight with a nice bigscreen for the stands below so you get to see everything.

these photos were on a practice day in 2010.

As a fellow member mentionned, the cheapest spot to watch from will be the Rocher (below the Palace). Tickets are available from a number of websites, check for the best deals.

Also the Monaco Automobile Club website is full of useful information, but it seems to be down at the minute.

As for travel, your options from the UK are car, train or plane. Driving is not cheap, you're looking at around €100 of tolls through France (each way) + fuel + ferry. You could take the train, Eurostar from London then TGV from Paris to Marseille - not exactly sure of costs here but its a smooth and quick journey. Flying is your best bet most of the time, but the airlines are not stupid, they know the Grand Prix is on (and the Cannes Film Festival the week before)and jack up the price of flights to Nice.

As for once you've arrived, let me tell you something, it is BUSY. Its estimated the population of Monaco goes from 30,000 to over 300,000 for the weekend. Forget driving in, it'll be a nightmare (unless you're up really early - but then you're still left with parking). Train, cycling, walking or boat are the easiest way.

Regarding accomodation: there are no camp sites within walking distance of Monaco. There are a few in the area, but you'd need a car to get to and from them. Prices for everything sky-rocket but if that's not a problem look for hotels in: Monaco, Cap d'Ail, Beausoleil, Roquebrune Cap Martin (withing walking distance). Other towns (not within walking distance) are: La Turbie, Menton, Ville-Franche, Nice, Eze, Beaulieu.

My top tip would be this: http://monaco.angloinfo.com/forum/category.asp?Cat... Its a website/board used by English communities living abroad. It works really well. My advice would be have a rummage through the classifieds seeing if anyone is renting out their flat/room/house for the Grand Prix (very common thing to do). In the unlikely event you can't find anything, post a 'Wanted' ad ("Looking for Grand Prix accomodation") and you will get replies.

That's all I can think of for now. I study in the UK but live and grew up in/around Monaco so know it pretty well. Let me know if you want more help
