afternoon Francophiles and PH Bretheren Francais.

We ae in the process of making a move to the Pyrenees and the spectre of exporting/importing our stuff has now become a pending reality.

Aside from a couple of over powered motorcycles I have a Midget that in the process of 'mental' modification. I say mental, as I yet to press start on the work.

Essentially, it'll involve an engine/drive line swap (to a K series), suspension modifications and some other cosmetics.

its a road legal project and I want to remain legal once over there. I understand through myth and rumour alone that non-cosmetic modifications are a no-no out there?

Can anyone shed any light on the subject from experience? Surely there are 'Rally & Sprint' cars out there that are running about with tickets?

thanks in advance.

Firstly,where in the Pyrenees?

I too wanted to be legal so looked into all the paperwork,in the end just got rid of the cars and bought French.

Most don't bother with being 100% legal around my neck of the woods.Fill in the export bit of the V5,insure with Generali or similar and get a CT,Plod don't seem too bothered.

Hi Smiffy.

Entre Perpignan and Carcassonne is the target zone. Despite vacating the UK in January (TBC and all digits crossed) we won't be house hunting due to other commitments until the middle of 2012. A period of ness is on the cards and a period where the direction of the Euro will be maybe more apparent.

Option to sell the Midget isn't on the cards for family reasons.

I take it you mean a CT as far as it can go? I understood (again rumour and voodoo) that the inspection garage couldn't issue CT paperwork unless it was on a French plate. Although of course it wouldn't stop them actually DOING the inspection, what good is that to PC Le Plod when I get a pull or am involved in a prang?

There should be someone along a bit later with far more knowledge than me. But you may me able to get it classed as a collection car/classic.(voiture de collection i think) It may be possible that the mot (ct) garage are a tad more leanient with collection vehicles.
I woulnt worry to much about the mods. Just make sure you have it registered in France along with mot and insurance. And DONT have an accident. Good luck.

I live in France have have done for about 5 years. I am heavily into the classic car scene and think I can speak with some authority so let me dispel both myth and rumour at a stroke by telling you that you will NEVER get such a car onto French plates.

Your first, and frankly virtually insurmountable, hurdle will be getting an attestation from the FFVE, the French historic vehicle organisation.

This takes the place of a Certificate of Conformity which is no longer available for Midgets or MGB's but is still required both for the CT and the subsequent registration at the prefecture. The FFVE will generally only approve genuine cars - with period mods - and others if they are of specific historic interest. You may be able to slip say a MGB V8 roadster through but only if the engine details are reflected on the V5C but yours, with it's completely alien engine, will go straight into the 'NON' tray.

Believe me this is a path a great many have trod before you, and with cars which fall well below the description of 'mental', yet their success rate is near zero.

Of course if you come to live in France then you become French resident which means you have no option but to register your car(s) here.

Thanks for the info. I used 'mental' in the sense that it was a theoretical modification...but I take your point.

Guess I may get the 1500 'refreshed' which will leave me 40HP down and 3 grand up. I'll do the mods to the suspension post import and hope for the best.
