I know most engine mods are illegal over there if you're intending to register/insure in France but assuming you don't have anything that makes the car stupid loud and you're only over there visiting (assuming all mods are declared and covered by UK insurance, of course) then what are the odds of getting hassle from les flics when driving around in a calm and law-abiding fashion?

Also does anyone know what the score is with HID headlights out there?

Don't worry about it. The French wouldn't.

In the UK there are few rules but everyone abides by them.

In France there a loads of rules but nobody pays any attention to them.

My TVR has a JP exhaust and falls into the category of "more than stupid loud".
No-one official has ever commented in nearly 20 years.

Fair enough, I just don't want to take my car over (usually take my mum's but I am gonna be out there a couple of months so might as well take mine out instead), get over into Calais or a couple of hundred K's down the autoroute and get messed around with by bored Gendarmes at the first peage who decide my car isn't road legal for France because it has an induction kit instead of the factory airbox, and frogmarch me to the cash point to fork out a thousand euro or whatever.

if only that were true! There's far too much legislation in this country regarding personal freedom these days!

I do know what you mean, I was speaking relatively I suppose. France is still the king of bureaucracy.
