Can anyone help?
If a car is off the road ie. long term re-build, does it have to be insured. French reg car.
I can't seem to get an answer from any of my French friends as they have never had a car in this situation.

A kind gesture, but one that seems akin to asking wolves whether or not they fancy mutton for breakfast lick

If it stays off public roads, there's no specific requirement in law for it to have insurance.

However:
  • Property insurance may or may not cover fire/theft/storm damage etc. for the car.
  • Under Civic Responsability law, an uninsured owner could potentially be held liable for any damage or injury caused by a vehicle, even during/following theft (yes, I know rolleyes).
There used to be a specific contract called "assurance parking" to cover precisely these scenarios for a nominal fee. Not sure whether it still exists; suspect insurance lobbying might have killed it.

If you don't want to take the risk, and if the car's over 10 years old, it may be eligible for 3rd party classic insurance (much cheaper).

Hope that helps,

EDIT : I've just realised how old the original post was. Oh well, maybe the info will help someone...

Thanks for the info.
The car is finished and sold, I got it on to a mates trade plates but the mainstream insurers were not interested in providing any cover on a temporary basis.
Very different to the UK, but hey it's France
