I say bloody menace who should have her license revoked immediately

http://www.gm.tv/index.cfm?articleid=33969

I'm not sure how long this link will last on the GMTV website, but the gist is some idiotic woman gets confused betwixt accelerator and brake and races down a long drive.......out of control, narrowly misses her own daughter, careers down a bank and wrecks the car.

this whole process must have taken probably 10 seconds, all the time she didn't think of a single way of avoiding possibly the most avoidable accident i have seen.

The trouble with taking licenses off old people is that your are often also removing their independence which means the state get lumbered with huge bills to care for them. Much easier to let them cause chaos on the roads.

Very true, if she stays at home for the next 20 years and has her family registered as carers then she'll be raking it in and it will cost the state a fortune.

If she dies in a blazing inferno at the end of her drive it'll only cost a few grand.

Kick her back doors in?

You might need to next time to pull her out of the wreckage

" I was tryin to put my seatbelt on and hit the accelerator by mistake, I was then heading down the driveway towards my daughter so I tried to hit the brake again but got the accelerator"

Come on, seriously...........she should have her license taken away right now! Even if a car is moving unexpectedly I would think you would still have an idea where the pedals were, if not... hand brake???

I agree. Wouldn't be so easy if she'd approached a zebra crossing and used that "excuse" then hit someone.

Their aging is taking away their independence. Being unable to drive is a symptom of that, like needing a stairlift or a moving to a bungalow.

How on earth do you hit the accelerator to that extent whilst putting your seatbelt on? The seatbelt is the first thing I put on before the car is even ready to drive off.

I did wonder about that?
Obviously I've never pulled off & put my seatbelt on afterwards!

I always get in, switch the engine on, then put my seat belt on. It gives the oil a chance to move around the engine on no load before setting off.

But if you do pull off whilst putting the belt on, you are in control of the car, you don't just hit the accelerator and get up to that kind of speed surely, you already know where your foot is and hence not get confused? Or am I missing something?

Brushing the pedal I could understand, hitting it hard enough to send a car shooting down a drive way, which isn't exactly short by the look of it, is just plain ridiculous. She even says that she had time to realise her daughters car was there and take avoiding action, but still had her foot on the accelerator! Plain and simple incompetence.
Even so, to move the car forwards she would have had to already be in gear/drive, so she not only had to hit the gas, but release either the clutch, brake or even both! People who are clearly incapable of even the most basic levels of car control should have their license revoked, but be able to get it back by re-passing their test. If that was my gran, I'd have to think quite seriously about removing her car keys.
