Am I stupid?

Basically I want your opinion.

I am in the hideously un-enviable position of working in Tesco. I know, it cant be that bad if I actually have a job at the moment but that is sort of the problem.

I have wanted to work in the motor trade for most of my working life (I am 21, working on and off from 16, went to uni for a year). Recently I have heard of, and am trying desperately to apply for, a trainee sales position at a BMW/mini dealership about 30 miles away from where I live (tesco being a ten minute walk from my house).

My question is that in the current financial climate, would I be an idiot to leave my safe, easy job at Tesco (which I hope not to have to do for too long) and move to a job in an industry that could be facing serious difficulties in the near future?

Obviously this is all hypothetical as I would not leave Tesco until I had another job, but if I did get the BMW/Mini position, do you guys think it would be a good move? If it doesn't work out and I am out of a job then I could be really screwed, like the other 2 million+ unemployed

I would sit tight for now, and see how the situation develops. If things improve in the future, then go for it.

You only live once. If you are desperate for the car job, go for it. You could end up on the dole just as easily from Tesco you know wink

Check out the financial health of your potential dealership. If they've got sufficient reserves to weather the storm, then make the move. When the upturn comes you'll already be an experience pimp er... salesman smile

Tesco are cutting hours left right and centre, they have made so many positions redundant but it hasn't been on the news.

Take a chance, the chance you do take could lead to all sorts of possibilities, the chance you don't take won't.

If your basic wage at the MINI dealership is much less than you are earning at Tesco, don't expect to make it up in sales commission, especially so early in your car sales career.

A lot of folks starting out in car sales often can't afford to stay until they are good enough to make a decent living out of it.

If it does look likely that you can make enough to survive on, go for it.

It's the old question isn't it? No rewards without taking a risk and obviously the risk in your scenario is higher now than it was a few years back.

Only you can make the call.

Is it sales particularly you're wanting to get into, or motor trade generally? A good mechanic/tech with a decent brain can be running his own independant within a few years of qualifying and there's real money to be made if you're good.

The main point here I think is the going from a 'proper' wage as it were, to a commission based income. That will be the killer in this economic/financial climate.

Lots of experienced salesmen out of work & looking for jobs.
In this climate, unless you have a good and documentable history in sales you are unlikely to get past the paper sift.
Have you not considered working your way up the Tesco ladder?

Of course its a volatile market and no one knows for sure when it will pick up, but surely if BMW/Mini are offering the position in the first place, they expect it to be for the long term? They wouldnt bother investing in training you up if they think theres a sizeable chance the opportunity won't last.

I've got more hours than I want (in tesco anyway), the "management strategy" for the group I work for involves employing just enough people and offering more overtime than they can fill.

Theres as much money there as you want (within reason), but I'm happy enough getting by and having the spare time on my hands. The shifts are good aswell, start at 06.30, finish anywhere between 10.30 and 15.30. Or start at 14.30-16.30, finish at 23.30, so I cant complain there.

I am only contracted for 18 hours a week, but like I said, the overtime more than makes up for it.

cheers for the input, obviously its all hypothetical as I havent been offered another job yet, but its good to have other peoples opinions

The vacancy is probably there because the regular sales bods can't make it pay anymore. I doubt it will be due to expansion of the sales force to meet increased demand biggrin

Do you have any debts that you're paying off? Are you paying rent or still living at home? If you have no financial obligations, why not? What can you loose?

When I was 16-20 I changed jobs every few months and loved it, I didn't have to worry about bills, met loads of new people and learnt a lot about different professions.

Its not a pendragon dealership.

I have considered working my way up the Tesco ladder but dont particularly fancy doing that, I am capable of more.

When I am 25 I am going into the family business but have to wait until 25 for insurance reasons as I will be going in as a driver. I am not even thinking of this as it is a while off and hopefully going in as a driver will be a step down from what I am doing then.

Seriously though, is there nothing on TV or something?

Trouble with only having an 18 hour contract and then working more than that in overtime is that your sickness and holidays is worked out on your contracted hours, as is any time off sick (they love it when you have a high absence percentage!)
