If you live in the uk (whihc i think you do)
If you intend on airsoft, but i think its also being change for any air rifles or live firearm
You can only buy 2 tone air rifles.
You are only allowed RIF's once you have been to a airsoft site for more than 3 time within a 2 month period.
You are also only allow to buy an air rifle above the age of 18
this is in the act "VCRA 2006" breaking these rules will get you arrested and maybe shot if the police firearm officer thinks you may be a large threat.
And heres a link for air rifles

the budget is £500 and i dont have a clue where to begin, i take it you arent allowed mail order?
many thanks
Mail order is out thanks to a recent act - you'll need to go along and buy face to face.many thanks
First decision is do you want a 'springer' or a PCP (pre-charged) rifle? With that kind of funding you are at the top of the Springer budget and could get something very special that will last a lifetime. PCP wise, not so much choice - take a look at airgunbuyer.com or similar for more info.
My advice would be to start with a Springer as they're are fuss free, easy to use weapons. They're also cheaper generally and easier to get along with. a PCP requires charging equipment, pumps etc.
Brand wise, that's an easy one, as there's just one. Weihrauch.* (pronouced vy-rowk) Say what you want about the Germans but boy can they build weapons. Arguably their finest, most accurate Springer would be something like a HW97k That should set you back around £330 - the change should buy you a decent scope and as well - all you need
- Ok, Air Arms, Theoben aren't too bad either

The two tone is only for airsoft. Air rifles are considered real firearms, not RIFs like airsoft, are not included by the two-tone or site membership rule.If you intend on airsoft, but i think its also being change for any air rifles or live firearm

As has been said, the couple of websites that still sell air rifles will post to your local gun dealer, who will normally charge you a small handling fee.

Might be worth looking about and registering to airgun forums, I think a lot of them have sale areas, obviously not mail order, but you might strike lucky and find something good (and presumably well maintained!) locally.http://www.ukclassifieds.co.uk/theoben_fenman_22_f...
s/h Fenman for sale here, i don't think they are made anymore, but they were a decent rifle.
I almost picked up a Skan Bullpup 6 months ago after spotting a cheap listing, but it had sold before i managed to contact the guy.
Now THEY were a nice piece of kit!

slight hijack: i know buying brand-new is illegal by mail order unless you get it mailed to a gun dealer and pick it up, but what about second hand sales, are they under the same restrictions?
I know for airsoft it was legal but then so was buying brand new by direct mail order if you could prove you were a member of a site, and airsoft and air rifles are distinguished in the VCR so im not sure about second hand air rifle sales.
