The story of Arthur West, who as a passenger on the Titanic climbed down a rope to one of the lifeboats, gave his wife a flask of hot milk for their baby daughters, then climbed back up onto the deck to his death.

OK, so he was just one of many, and doubtless many others had similar stories, but to actually be in the safety of a lifeboat with your family, and still go back? Not sure I'd have had the courage to do that.

So, following this guys brave and heroic actions, to save his family, him and his wife and the children are now dead. Obviously, time goes on and all that.

One would assume these 'artefacts' have been passed down to a relative, yes?

Who goes and f***ing sells them in an auction.

Family heirlooms? Pride in your family? Repsect? Naa, f**k it, i might be able to buy a Porsche....

As for the 'would I?' question... hmmmmm...

I have major ethical headaches when it comes to questions like this. If it's between me and a woman of similar age - hell no. I'm sorry, but why should someone else live instead of me, the only difference being our gender.

Should a baby live instead of me? Probably yes, but part of my brain says "hell, its not lived, so it wouldn't know what it's missing. I'm 31 and i've still got a lot of life to live and dreams to fulfill".

Am i gonna burn in hell? Probably.

I wouldn't do it. No way. I would consider my family as one unit and would do everything in my power to ensure it stayed as complete as possible.

I don't get the woman first argument either. It's not like we are short of the baby making factories.

Or someone might be in such a desperate situation that they are trying to save their family from being homeless? And maybe they are thinking the memories are better than possessions?

That bit, I do understand. If I ever did anything heroic which magically bestowed huge value upon intrinsically worthless items like these, I'd rather my grandchildren cashed in an had the deposit to buy a house or whatever rather than just looking at the nice flask on the shelf.

Red in a paper this morning that a turkis man hid under the dresses of the women so they could get a place on the boat.

Surprisingly the women didn't mind - until he lit a fag!

Mmmm, on the other hand the relatives may have just lost their jobs due to the ecomonic shcensoredstorm and need to pay their mortgage before they lose the house and to put a bit of food on the table for the kids...

Fair point - i was having a bit of a sh*t day when i wrote that.

There are always reasons why people do this sort of thing, and a lot of the time they are honourable.

I'd like to think I would. Better to die a hero than live a coward.

I hope his children and grandchildren are very, very proud of this man.

Strictly, he wasn't. It was "women and children first", therefore he wouldn't have been expected to stay on the lifeboat as he'd be taking up space that a woman or child could have.

BBC page said:
Ada wrote that the noble actions of her husband, whom she referred to in one letter as "Dad", had not been matched by two men who had managed to sneak on to their lifeboat.

In a statement to the Board of Trade she revealed that the men had hidden under women passengers' skirts
I say that, however, merely as a point of note. What he did was incredibly selfless and truly heroic. And yes, for the sake of my wife and, moreover, children, I'm pretty confident I would do it.
