Bloke on the phone asks the problem, I explain, He asks me all relevent security questions, name address, postcode, account number, card number etc etc. then says
'can i put you on hold please sir'
so i said yeah thats fine.
a minute passes
the guys come back and asks 'hello are you still there?'
i said yes
then he says.... wait for it... this is brilliant...
'sorry, i cant do anything for you sir as you sound alot older than your date of birth suggests, are you 19 sir'

Abbey are the most hopeless clueless time wasting wazzocks ever.
I have regular battles with them over cleared funds and general staff ineptitude.
I once handed them £200 over the counter to put in my account and when I got given the receipt it stated that £20 had been put in, I asked the till monkey why it was £180 short and he replied that "he could not do anything about it now and I would have to wait until they had cashed up at the end of the day to see if the till was £180 up." Needless to say I went mental and demanded to see the manager who was no help, I simply waited 3 days for them to give me my money back and put it in my account. oh so helpfull.
I also get sick of being asked EVERY time I go in to my branch if i would like a credit card/mortgage? NO, it was NO last time and its NO now and guess what, Its NO next time too, I have been coming in here 20 years, I know all the desk staff in order of uselessness and I fail to see how after all the fuss and arguments I have had over the years you cannot recognise me.
Bank of mattress, its less hassle and a better interest rate.

In the world of insults, that one of the more .... "esoteric" ones, I'm sure. Oli.
This couldn't be the same lot who effectively kicked every solicitor in England and Wales off their panel at the start of the month (with no warning) and made them re-apply. If you didn't have an outstanding mortgage offer they refused to re appoint you.
We were fine but I know of a number of solicitors who are very worried about the problems this is going to cause them in the future.
Worst thing is that they didn't even appear to have told the people you have to deal with about it.

Change your bank, I did, after waiting three months for a replacement debit card to arrive (with lots of fun events in the middle). Went to Alliance & Leicester (all Ok with them so far) only for them to be taken over by Santander 12 months later. The transfer was VERY painless and they do all of the donkey work for you.

if you say that because you dont understand i shall explain ....
Thanks for the explanation - I didn't get the link. anonymous said:

They are raved about on here fairly regularly. I'd recommend them equally as heartily, as would pretty much everyone who has tried them. Oli.

Anyone else get the "do you want a £15k loan?" letter every month? No I don't you fkwits, isn't the £20k loan I took out last year not enough?!?
My Brother has an Abbey something bank account and credit card. Pays off card, not overdrawn or anything naughty. His salary goes into another (Barclays) account though, he earns more than the national average salary so is OK off (no mortgage). He applied for a £2,500 loan to buy a new bike. They just replied saying no, his credit score was too low (guess with no house debt he is a higher risk - logic defies me sometimes). He'll get one from Barclays OK (has had one before). Thing is, this would have been easy interest for them. Gits - I'll be encouraging him to move his account/card away from them now.Utterly Clueless said:

Time to steal more petrol. Or get a pushbike. Ah, hang on...

Is it just me (I'm with A+L too) or is there a flaw in that suggestion?Just waiting for A+L to migrate to the Santander systems, as Abbey has, then I may well migrate elsewhere too.

I disagree ... Alliance and Leicester are the worst. I have regular battles with them over cleared funds and general staff ineptitude.

Any vist to my local branch always ends up with me being advised to use the in house phone and ringing customer services.
Cheques take 5 days (once 10 days) to clear when I use their automated dalek thing even though after asking they say it takes 3 days, "but we only empty on Tuesday" (WTF?)
I have never been able to take cash out over the counter, always been directed (after speaking over the inhouse phone) to call at the Post Office down the road.
At least Santander haven't got far to train these monkeys this time!!!
We moved from Abbey to Nationwide a couple of years ago after a series of fkups;
We moved house in 2003 and changed to a new mortage product with Abbey, cancelling the old mortgage and taking out a new, higher one. All fine until that offer finished and we changed to Nationwide. When credit searched we were declined due to almost 2 years worth of missed payments on a previous mortgage, turns out Abbey hadn't closed off the original mortgage and were sending a nil payment code to the credit ref agencies every month for 2 years. That took us almost 2 months to sort out with them, they even stated it could take longer as their data had been archived by then and they'd have to call it back. Quick call to the financial ombudsmen helped sort it quicker - no apology though.
Also our current account, for no reason at all they cancelled a standing order I set up, re-did it and they cancelled it again, then got the details wrong. Then they proceeded to cancel our debit cards - again with no reason (a/c never in overdraft and had over 2.5k a month going through it as our going bills account). It took several months to get a new card from them - each time we called a card was on its way etc. They are absolutely useless & I'd never go back to them - the Indian call centre staff are hopeless and branch staff haven't a clue!

I'd have called the Police. How can someone not remember the difference between being handed a £20 note or a pile of notes?
999 - "Hello? Police? Robbery in progress at the Abbey in the High St".
