People are so much more compliant when they are living in fear (Cold War/environment/terrorism/Communist superpower/etc). Having a bogeyman to blame or distract from domestic problems is very convenient.

Well, we are heading deeper into economic problems, people are losing jobs throughout the US, what better time to start a new Cold War?

Money can be invested in defence projects, jobs can be created, and it will take everybody's minds off global warming and muslim terrorism.

It has been almost twenty years since the Soviet Union collapsed, the time is now right to line up another country to spar with.
