Terrorists of course have never heard of cell organisations, codes, and cyphers.

There are thousands of communication mediums that they cannot monitor that the terrorists are more likely to use to communicate.

Forums for example...

So what is the real reason behind this, giving the general public a false sense of security? Keeping the "terrorist" threat in peoples minds? Or something far far more sinister?

Of course that does nothing to give them anyideas of my plans seeing as I am not on any of them

HA HA Yet again Winky Mcfknut is foiled by a master criminal, or someone with no desire to speak to old school friends and remember why you dont see each other anymore.

How will they understand half the text speak used on the damn sites?

Just another excuse to snoop IMHO. Terrorists don't exactly set up a "Let's Blow up London" Group on Facebook do they now?

More likely to quash any plans of dissent from the populace.

Piss boiler for me. There's no WAY in this world that terrorists are going to organise themselves on Bebo or any other site. This is nonsense. 'Terror' angle is pure spin.

Couple of potential real reasons:
i) False sense of security / Being seen to be doing something
ii) Monitoring the law abiding UK population as part of an evil masterplan

lol, they dont have the resource or knowledge base to be able to do that.

Imagine them trying to monitor EVERY forum on the internet, Usenet, IRC, MSN Messenger, All the chat rooms, all the PM clients, all the TS, Ventrilo & Similar VOIP servers, all the private FTP servers (drop a text file with a normal looking extension on it (*.dll for example) onto an FTP for someone to pick up later.

So much traffic so little time.

Its like metal detectors at airports, you assume safety, which is what they want you too think.

So, essentially creating another database......

This comes a day after this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7955205.stm <==== call to scrap ILLEGAL databases

They must have memories like Goldfish.....or they are just ignorant. My votes on the latter smile

High on the media frenzy and low on the detail.

Our security services have been monitoring what we have been doing for some time. Why would you be surprised by this? Anyway, its never going to happen just like all of the other initiatives that the government launches.

ECHELON is good old Smoke and Mirrors.

Im not gonna say intellegence gathering doesnt go on but its more targeted at known individuals than mass spam of checking everything in the whole world.

Well... might as well monitor everything . Good news is that there is no transponder implantation yet. Evidently well organized criminals will simply avoid electronic media or use more sophisitcatred encryption.
Similar to drug raids which rarely catch the principals, byt round up some low level foot soldiers.
