Popular Culture in the UK
Discussion
Do you find you have almost nothing in common with 90% of the UK population?
I know it would be boring if we all liked the same things but it appears (IMO) popular culture is for sheep, who have no real opinion or passion about anything.
I may be no better than these ignorant daily mail reading sheep but I do strive to be different. Maybe "underground" is a more apt term.

Yet your on a Website dedcated to people who have one thing in common, a love of cars....
I don't get "being individual" it's like those clubs in North London where everyone in there dresses "scatty" with pink socks and oversized white sunglasses and plimsoles, they say they dress diferently, except when you walk in there, they look like everyone else in the club and indeed camden and me after work in a suit, is the only person who looks different.

er... yes? Next question?
Are you paranoid that we're all being turned into mindless drones that think the same thing so that we're easier to control by politicians, secret societies etc?
I like to think of myself as outside of popular culture because I'm intelligent enough to see past it. However I could be completely wrong because I find it really hard to make new friends and well er... pull. Haven't had a date since this time last year! However I would say that once you get past the stage of "it won't drop off through lack of use as you piss with it" it gets better... ;-)
I'm curious as to where you're going with this?

Interesting.
I used to go clubbing. The clubs we went to got absolutely no covering in the mainstream media, music or otherwise, and most people I spoke to, unless there were in to a very specific type of music, they had never heard of them.
It always got me wondering what kind of other cultures there were, just under the surface, but completely out of sight of everyone except for a tiny minority of people involved in them.

Goth clubs are the same! They're all trying to be different yet they look identical to each other. Just wear what you want and what you feel good in. If someone has an issue with it or you, they're not worth knowing. Of course we all like cars, but whats motoring nirvana to one person is a pile of ste to someone else. So we're all here as intelligent, independent individuals who respect each other enough to not call each others car a pile of crap or whatever.I don't get "being individual" it's like those clubs in North London where everyone in there dresses "scatty" with pink socks and oversized white sunglasses and plimsoles, they say they dress diferently, except when you walk in there, they look like everyone else in the club and indeed camden and me after work in a suit, is the only person who looks different.
I just worry that the mainstream commercial tripe that we are subjected to on a daily basis, will push some music for example even further underground. I have to travel a great distance just to listen to some music that I find appealing, which makes a night out cost a great deal of money.
I like Techno for example. Most peoples reaction is "ooo don't like that", but play them a track and don't tell them the genre, 9 times out of 10 you get an entirely different reaction.

It's not that they get riled, they're just overcome with self doubt and introspection and worry for days on how they are perceived.

Same here with heavy metal and some hard rock type stuff. Play a recent iron maiden song to most people and they'd go "oh is that what iron maiden sound like"!I like Techno for example. I have found that most people do actually quite like heavy metal as long as its well played - some bands have the talent, a lot of them don't. Its the ones that do that I listen to.

Lol.....so true!!! Does make me laugh when you hear them give their reasons. Its so hypocritical.I don't get "being individual" it's like those clubs in North London where everyone in there dresses "scatty" with pink socks and oversized white sunglasses and plimsoles, they say they dress diferently, except when you walk in there, they look like everyone else in the club and indeed camden and me after work in a suit, is the only person who looks different.

Well I'm going to set up a club that's so exclusive no one will be allowed in.
I give it 2 days before you are thrown out.Back on topic, I just get on with doing what I like and don't give a fk what people think.... most people anyway.
If I want to drive the S4 wearing massive Aviators listening to Whitesnake then I will.
If I want to wear a T-shirt and trainers to the pub then I will.
If I want to relax on a Saturday night, have a nice steak and play X-Box then.....
Well you get the picture, and since I started doing this I have felt much less angry and more relaxed in life.
Just be happy in the knowledge that people following the mass media heard are probably just doing it to 'fit in' and aren't really happy.
Careful wearing those aviators - trendy people have started wearing them. Plus the student types have emerged wearing the biggest white rayban wayfairer copies ever! Its like people have forgotten how bad the 80's were for fashion! ;-)
(and yes I am aware that leg warmers have been back for years!)

I don't find myself identifying with any particular named group. I object to the pigeonholing of others so certainly don't pigeonhole myself. Many people find security in a "them" and "us" definition in all different areas of life. It has never been a strong influence on me (and maybe I'm missing out) but if others derive pleasure from it, fair enough. Of course sometimes it does become dangerous - religious fanatics, football hooligans, fascists, etc.
The main focus of popular culture in the UK at the moment appears to be celebrating celebrity itself. People seem to aspire to be mediocre, to revel in failure rather than celebrate success. The rise of reality TV shows is one facet of this worship - is there a lazier, lower common denominator program format?
